Petrichor

Daily Gratitude Year 5-Day 96: Today, I am grateful for the smell of rain... petrichor.

There is a word for that wonderful smell that rises from the ground after rain begins to meet its thirst. Petrichor. (Note that the last part of the word is like the word anchor and it helps with pronunciation.)

It is one of my favorite smells on the planet. It is the smell of life and freshness as the dirt drinks and grime is washed away. Somehow, we scent and feel the satisfaction of nature taking it in. Heaven and nature does indeed sing.

"Singing in the Rain"... oh, Earworm is awake and singing a little Gene Kelly this morning. It is a glorious feeling. The sun will shine again, but for now... we've had opportunities to take in the petrichor.

The smell is not easily produced in a lab, but when something comes close, we savor it. Fresh... but earthy, too. It wraps us up and makes us feel alive all at the same time. A cozy wrap and a cup of something warm are the perfect companions.

Today... we have a dose of sun after some days of rain. Wouldn't that be lovely? Still, will thank him of the memories of petrichor. The scent that pardons our thirst and refreshes our souls.

Someone once suggested that God might smell like rain. I don't know, but I like the thought. This verse comes to mind again:

"May my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill as the dew, like gentle rain upon the tender grass, and like showers upon the herb." -Deuteronomy 32:2

A beautiful image is created and you can almost take in the petrichor. The smell of rain delights something deep within us.

Today, I am grateful for the smell of rain.
