Daily Gratitude Year Twelve-Day 2- Today, I am grateful for reminders that life is brief.
When I was a little girl, I have strong memories of this tagline, "Like sands through the hourglass, so are the "Days of our Lives."
Mama's "stories" came on at noon. Soap operas were a big deal back in the mid-60's, 70's, and early 80's. The were called "soap operas" because soaps sponsored the advertising time. I am sure the lives portrayed seemed so much bigger, bolder, and more exciting than Mama and Aunt Judy's days filled with mixing Kool-Aid, making peanut butter sandwiches, changing diapers, and doing laundry.
Looking back, I wonder if the time spent talking about the storylines of their "stories" had more value than you might think. Time spent talking about the big drama in their favorite shows made real-life more manageable. They would try to predict what would happen next. There were always plot twists.
I am not defending, debating, or condemning the television genre. It is merely an observation. Their "stories" reminded them often that health, life, and relationships are fragile. Trust broken is not easily rebuilt. Unforgiveness was always destructive. Brokenness did not last forever, but healing takes time.
I wonder if their "stories" helped them see the beauty in the simplicity of their ordinary days?
"Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom." -Psalm 90:12
No one is promised tomorrow? Does that change how we live out our days? Accepting the brevity of our time here can lead to different choices... hopefully, better choices. The seeds of wisdom grow in the fertile soil of a heart that seeks to be in relationship with our Lord.
We do not know the number of our days, but He does. Each one is a gift to be unwrapped with care and used with intention. How will we use this day?
Today, I am grateful for reminders that life is brief.
