I love to hear Christmas carols and songs. Our principal has been whistling "Hark The Herald Angels Sing" as he has passed by several times this week. I can't whistle, so I enjoy the sound. Christmas songs are everywhere and there are so many modern melodies that capture the meaning and the wonder. There are songs that simply make us smile.
I love an unexpected song. Yesterday, the band director led a group of students caroling through the halls. It was unexpected music filling the air. I certainly did not expect it and it was a sweet spot in the day.
I am reminded of the night the shepherds quietly sat the hillside with their flocks of sheep. What a surprise when the night sky shown a star brighter than the rest and angels singing. Crazy!
And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. -Luke 2:9-11
So much for a "boring night on the job". Oh, what a night! It starts with one angel and that was terrifying until they heard him speak. Then, a host of heavenly beings joined in to sing:
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” -Luke 2:13-14
Now that's a choir. They heard the praise and the excitement in their song. They packed up the sheet and followed the star. "The Little Drummer Boy" is a favorite. No, it is not Biblical, but is touches the heart of Christmas. The most simple of gifts are the more most precious. The best gift we can give is our heart.
Today, I pray you hear the unexpected song of Christmas in the madness of the season. Don't lose the precious melody in the march to the moment when everything must be finished. Make more than a minute for the manager... for Immanuel is the most magnificent gift every given. I, too, need this prayer. It is so easy to get sucked in to the flurry of events and tasks to be completed.
Today - I am grateful for an unexpected song.
