Animals are predominantly driven by instinct. I always think when an animal acts outside of a natural, instinctive response, there is a bit of a miracle involved.
We humans have higher thinking abilities than the other animals. Now, we don't always behave better because of those abilities, but we do have the power to choose.
This passage is full of guidance :
"And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise."-Philippians 4:8

Whatever the day ahead brings, we can be intentional in our thoughts. It helps to fix our eyes on Jesus.
