The Most Special Thing

Daily Gratitude Year 12 - Day 240: Today, I am grateful to be called "the most special thing."

I came across this story about Jimmy Stewart and his wife, Gloria. He is one of my favorite actors from that timeless era. Yes, "It's a Wonderful Life" is a classic, but there are so many others, including "Harvey." So many actors were difficult to work with, even back then. Jimmy Stewart always seemed grateful to be given the gift of doing what he loved to make a living.

His wife, Gloria, was lovely by any standard. Jimmy was matched with some of Hollywood's most beautiful leading ladies. Perhaps, that is what made him appreciate Gloria more. So much is artificial in Hollywood, and beauty that is only skin deep fades quickly.

Gloria told this story about her husband of 45 years, "I can honestly say that in all the years of our marriage, Jimmy never once gave me cause for anxiety or jealousy. The more beautiful and glamorous his leading lady was, the more attention he paid to me. I asked him once why he did that and he said, 'Because I want you to never feel anything less than the most special thing in my life.'"

Is it any wonder he played  George Bailey so perfectly? I think Jimmy had much to draw from when he was cast in that classic role. Gloria was obviously his real-life "Mary."

To be told, "You are the most special thing in my life" is surely one of the sweetest things a man can say to his girl in any season of life and love.

I love this passage from 1 Peter that declares us a "chosen people" and  "God's very own."

Amy Grant had an old song that went like this:

"Won't you say once more, I love you in the bread and in the wine. 'Til the whole world knows our love song. I am yours and you are mine." Oh, the unique and special beauty in an underserved (on our end), reciprocal, forever love! We are loved beyond measure. "The most special thing" in all of creation.

"But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.  " -1 Peter 2:9

Accept it. Savor it. Share it. Delight in His light and love.

Today, I am grateful to be called "the most special thing."
