"No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people." -Isaiah 58:6
It is day 9 of Lent. The passage is a part of a rebuke from the Lord, who wants them to understand that he can recognize the difference between true and false worship. He wants a relationship. Many want the benefits without the work and sincerity of a real commitment.
He is trying to make them understand their sins create the oppression they feel. They seek freedom and independence, but push away the One who can truly make them free. Many prefer what is comfortable and pleasurable in the moment over true freedom.
What binds our hearts today? What breaks the chains? Who or what can we set free?
Today, I am grateful for the chain breaker.
