The Gift of Another Day

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 365: Today, I am grateful for the gift of another day to choose gratitude.

This is the time of  year I have to decide if I am done with posting "Daily Gratitude". It takes time. It requires being intentional. Ten years is complete. 3,652 (two Leap Years in the mix)"Daily Gratitude" posts  made on Facebook. Do we go another year?

Losing Donna (Emma's Mom and one of my dearest friends) was a reminder to be more intentional with the time we have. I miss her wisdom in my world. She was the best of the best.

A decade seemed a good place to stop, although I will continue the practice privately ( because gratitude really does change everything). Then, in August and September, two very special people who walked in gratitude with me went to heaven.

Jeff Hanson made the frame around my writing desk out of wood. He has been a part of our extended family since 1993 when my brother married his sister. Every single day I write, I sit surrounded by something beautiful Jeff handcrafted just for our family. He sanded the wood, applied the stain and nailed every nail. His attention to detail was evident in everything he did.

Our shared niece was married in August. It was the last time I saw Jeff. We had the best conversation.  He mentioned "Daily Gratitude" and I told him I thought a decade might be a good place to stop. He said, "No. I don't always comment, but I do read it. Don't stop."  His final breath was just a couple of weeks later.

Another... one of my oldest friends and biggest encouragers, cheerleaders and willing editors (if I would ever put these in a book)... was Sally. Sally has been a part of my world since 5th grade. We have never lost touch. She married a Rosenboom... and the Rosenbooms are like extended family to the Lindgrens... which was all the sweeter. I knew life would never separate us for long.

I can't tell you how many times Sally would share something that would inspire a gratitude post or a deeper look at a scripture. She would send a verse, a thought or a quote... or we would share a conversation. She found a personal relationship with Jesus... she chased Him and his heart.  She was a smart girl who loved to dig deeper in the scriptures. I already miss the exchanges and promises of the next shared cup of coffee.  She introduced me to "Andrew Peterson" and the book series "Every Moment Holy". I've prayer for "her people" and she has prayed for "mine".

Then in October, Randy's cousin Becky lost her granddaughter, Cait.  It was unexpected. We have no words or understanding, as she was only ten.  Our hearts ache and break for them. Still, I see her parents and family looking for the tiniest reasons to be grateful through the pain.

Year eleven the focus will be on being intentional. We will see where it goes.

I am truly grateful for  all who take the time to read and walk with me. I am grateful for you.

I am grateful for the gift of another day to choose gratitude.

The End of the Book

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 364: Today, I am grateful for the hope at the end of The Book.

How do you feel at the end of a good book? The emotions can be mixed.

I am always excited to start a new book, but I am a little sad to leave the "old friends" behind. Characters who have become familiar are comfortable. I think it is why I like a good series. I don't have to get to know a new protagonists with each new book. I can see characters developing with each book in the series. It is good.

What about the end of the Bible? The book of Revelation used to be intimidating. The older I get, the more I see the hope between its chapters. Chapter 21 is a favorite. It describes heaven. Not completely, but with enough detail to spark our imagination.

This verse is one of my favorites:

"And the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light. " -Revelation 21:23

His light is the only light we will need. The reality is beyond our imaginations or our  wildest dreams.

Today, I am grateful for the hope at the end of The Book.

The Humble Tissue

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 363: Today, I am grateful for the humble tissue.

The disposable tissue... a "Kleenex" if you call it by the brand name that made its into our everyday vernacular... is indispensable in our homes. They help us get through colds and allergy seasons. They wipe away tears of sorrow.

This world is full of laughter and tears. Some tears are sad. Other times, we laugh  until we cry.  A tissue helps wipe them away.

I love this verse. It reminds me that we are not exempt from life's woes, but nothing of this world can steal our peace.

"I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” -John 16:33

In our trials, the tissue serves us well. Even better are the hugs from loved ones. We can't always "make something better", but we can offer comfort care. Part of the comfort and care package is a tissue.

There are times when the tissue helps wipe the dirt of a child's face or mud from the paws of a pet.  Such ordinary actions made easier by the disposable, paper tissue.

(Thanks for the inspiration Cousin Larry...love you!)

Today, I am grateful for the humble tissue.

Preparations Made

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 362: Today, I am grateful for preparations made.

Be it preparations for a visitor, a homecoming, or even a baby... intentional preparations create a sense of warmth and welcome. There is a joy and  a hope in the knowledge that someone is excited about  your arrival.

When Jesus was trying to prepare his disciples for his crucifixion, which would be followed by his return to heaven, He encouraged them with this promise:

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am." -John 14:1-3

It's a big house and there are many rooms. Unlike the full inn on that Bethlehem night, His house is being prepared for our arrival. For those who say "yes" to His call  upon their hearts, a room is reserved. The R.S.V.P. is received.

We don't know the hour or the minute we will take our last breath. Sometimes we have a little bit of warning. Other times, the call home is unexpected. We are instructed to be ready.

We can celebrate the knowledge that kneeling before the cross in repentance, recognizing His Lordship, and submitting our lives to His purpose seals the deal. Our names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.  When we arrive, it will be with celebration and expectation.

Today, I am grateful for preparations made.

Real Rest

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 361: Today, I am grateful for real rest.

Not a nap, but real rest.

On the Lindgren side of the family we have two speeds... full throttle and dead stop. I think I inherited a bit of that. It gets things done, but there is a price.

Rest, real and full,  is a special commodity. It is not something we can buy or capture. We have to pause, slow down, and be intentional. It is a rest that happens to the core of our very being. Real rest leads to restoration.

In these past few years, there has been loss compounded on loss in our family circles and in our close friends. People that have helped shaped and color our worlds leave empty chairs around the table. The loss is genuine. We are not alone in tasting loss. We are not alone in shared grief.

One of the things that comes as a gift to the grieving is the reminder to slow down, savor, share, and embrace each other as we walk through this life. It is good to remember that we are only passing through.   I hope we grow more compelled to say, "I love you." Those words matter.

This is my verse of the day:

"Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." -Matthew 11:28

Are you weary? Is the burden too heavy? Does life keep adding more? Remember, someone is waiting to help. Ready and willing to take our burdens as His own. He really is a Wonderful Savior and Lord. In Him, we find real rest.

Today, I am grateful for real rest.

Undivided Hearts

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 360: Today, I am grateful for undivided hearts.

This was my verse for the day:

Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me. -Psalm 103:1-2

Do I let "all that I am" praise him? Do I do it with an undivided heart?

Did someone say, "Squirrel?" Our attention spans can be short and distractions divide our attention, interfering with our intentions. Life is full.

We are called to seek the Messiah... Yeshua Ha-Mashiach … with a sense of pursuit. Not giving in. Not giving up. We are to be intentional, opening our souls to fully praise Him.

Such a great reminder. I like this NLT translation. "All that I am" is soul deep.

With my whole heart, means nothing held back. I think my "one little word" for 2023 will be "intention". Different variations of the word will be good to explore. I always have much to learn.

Today, I am grateful for undivided hearts.

Simeon

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 359: Today, I am grateful for Simeon.

Simeon waited a lifetime for the Lord to keep his promise that he would see the Messiah before he died. "The Spirit" led Simeon to the temple on  just the right day at just the right time. He knew who Jesus was when Joseph and Mary presented him.

Anna, a female prophet, recognized Jesus, too. That a woman would be part of the story was and is significant. Jesus would reshape so many things about what people knew as religion. He came for a relationship. Not just for the Jews, but for everyone... as Simeon points out. The gentiles would be welcomed into the family through Jesus.

So many things had to come together at just the right time. It is truly amazing. Because we have "witnessed" the wonder of it all, we can know it is true.

Anna and Simeon knew in their souls, they had seen the Messiah. The wait is over.

Simeon was there. He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying, “Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace, as you have promised. I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all people. He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel!” -Luke 2:28-32

He declares his peace. We can have the same peace.

Today, I am grateful for Simeon.

A Child Is Born...

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 358: Today, I am grateful "A Child is Born."

The reminder of that Holy Night, so very long ago. The song, "Oh Holy Night" is a favorite for many. For me, I have been slow to appreciate it. I am not sure why.

Lately, the lyrics have grabbed my heart. I think it is the line that says "the weary soul rejoices... fall on  your knees... oh, hear the angels..." The image the song creates is powerful.

Yes, I am late to the table on appreciating that song, but not to the stable. We have so much to celebrate. The Child on a mission has arrived! We celebrate the end of the wait. We celebrate  hope.

"For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." -Isaiah 9:6

Today, I am grateful "A Child is Born."

Just A Little Longer...

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 357: Today, I am grateful it is just a little longer.

Can you imagine the trip to Bethlehem from Nazareth for the fully pregnant Mary? With all of our first world comforts, belly pillows, comfy cars and maternity underwear (girls, you know what I mean), Mary had none of those comforts.

Their marriage, still new, was probably still a little awkward. He wasn't a stranger, but they were not like most couples when the baby came. The Bible is clear, "He did not know her" until after the baby came. They had not experienced typical  couple intimacy. It has to be strange for both of them, but they pressed on and into their calling. They said, "Yes." to what God asked of them.

So many focus on Mary. Joseph has stolen my heart with this gentle patience and trust.  It must have been hard for him to watch her discomfort. It is very likely that he was older than her. Not a teenager, as was the custom of the day. The Bible is not clear. Would it make any difference if he was twenty or thirty? It was not the way he saw his life plan playing out.

This is all we really know about the journey. Notice, there is no donkey reference.

"And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee.  He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now expecting a child.
And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them." - Luke 2:4-7

It would have been common to take an animal. If Joseph did not have one, I imagine there were offers from compassionate family or friends... especially at the urging of their wives who had been in her condition. I think that a donkey was easy to insert into the scenario. It makes sense.

Whether she was walking or riding, she was uncomfortable. I imagine Joseph was rubbing her back when he saw her discomfort and would ask her regularly if she needed a break. I am pretty sure she had her eyes set on the road ahead, longing to get to their destination before the baby came.

How many times did Joseph say, "Just a little longer, Mary, just a little longer? "How many prayers did he offer up for her to make it to the village where there would be a little more comfort for his new wife? Did he hear that still, soft voice whisper, "Just a little longer, Joseph. Just a little longer."

Children all over the world are thinking, "Just a little longer."
Parents all over the world are thinking, "Just a little longer for the kids to wait."

As the anticipation of Christmas escalates, I can't help but think of the prophecies in the book of Revelation and wonder, "Is it just a little longer?" As the world prepares for Santa, may we not forget to prepare for the coming of the King. It will be just a little longer.

Today, I am grateful it is just a little longer.

Bone Deep Chills

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 356: Today, I am grateful for bone deep chills.

We are in the grips of a winter blast. The chill is bone deep. I don't like that kind of chill. It makes me hurt, not just from the cold, but there are some neurological issues I have to contend with that this kind of cold magnifies.

Still, I am reminded that God gave us pain to help us protect our bodies. If it hurts, stop. Pain helps us set limits we would fail to set without the trigger of discomfort.

The same goes for that bone deep chill. Cover up, snuggle up and stay put. It is a warning to us to make good choices about wearing proper outerwear when outside and to be mindful of personal safety. Be prepared with gas, a blanket and a fully charged phone.

There is another kind of bone deep chill. It is the kind that is more like a sixth sense about danger. When the Wisemen (the magi) arrived seeking the new King, King Herod's behavior caused them to not return. He was acting a little crazy.

Okay. Herod was crazy, but I am not sure the travelers knew it. It didn't take long for them to realize they would not go back to the palace after they found the King they were seeking.  Being with King Herod was unsettling.

" And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judah,  are not least among the ruling cities[a] of Judah, or a ruler will come from you  who will be the shepherd for my people Israel.’” Then Herod called for a private meeting with the wise men, and he learned from them the time when the star first appeared. Then he told them, “Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him, too!”-Matthew 2:6-8

They would find Jesus. They would choose another way home. They would not return to Herod.

Today, I am grateful for bone deep chills.

Linus's Big Moment

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 355: Today, I am grateful for Linus's big moment.

Our local Christian radio station is doing a little contest to get to the all time favorite Christmas movie. They are in the final rounds before Christmas so they are really putting the greats against each other. Today, it was "It's a Wonderful Life" vs. "Elf". I did not vote. Inspiring and classic, "It's a Wonderful Life" would likely be my final decision, but "Elf" is  so sweet and quotable.

This passage is quoted in "A Charlie Brown Christmas" from 1965. It is one of my favorite moments from a Christmas movie. It is when Linus, who is so fearful of everything he carries around a security blanket... throws it down to quote from the Gospel of Luke:

"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord"-Luke 2:8-11

Linus's big moment of declaring the real meaning of Christmas was nearly cut from the movie. CBS wanted it on the editing room floor. Charles Schultz reportedly stormed out of a meeting simply furious. In the end, he wouldn't budge. CBS conceded. It was the 2nd most popular broadcast that week. "A Charlie Brown Christmas" made its way into the annual lineup where it remained until 2020, when Apple bought all rights to the Charlie Brown film franchise.

Here is Linus sharing the true meaning of Christmas:

The True Meaning of Christmas

It is truly a priceless moment. Fear is gone and knowledge of the Truth brings courage and clarity. There is much to be learned from our little friend, Linus.

In the chaos of the season and the promise of blizzard conditions on the way, it is good to pause and refocus on the babe in the manger, the Savior, which is Christ the Lord.

Today, I am grateful for Linus's big moment.

The Twelve Days of Christmas

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 354: Today, I am grateful for The 12 Days of Christmas.

I remember enjoying the song as a child. Now, it is not my favorite because it takes forever to finish, but I adore the meaning behind the 12 Days.

Each one has a connection to faith. When Queen Elizabeth 1 of England took the throne, she forbade the practice of faith. Each of the verses has a connection to faith. It helped children and adults alike to not forget the meaning of their faith.

Joseph and Mary were a poor couple and doves were one of the acceptable sacrifices for the poor. Two turtle dove are to help them remember Joseph and Mary. Or, the Old and New Testament - depending on which explanation you read.

Jesus, the baby in the manger, is the partridge in a pear tree.

It is good to have little songs and games that help us remember the reason for the season.

And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.” -Luke 2:12

Today, I am grateful for The 12 Days of Christmas.

Zechariah's Prophecy

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 354: Today, I am grateful for Zechariah’s Prophecy.

“And you, my little son, will be called the prophet of the Most High, because you will prepare the way for the Lord. You will tell his people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins. Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us " -Luke 1:76-78

This passage is extra sweet in the NLT translation. You can feel the deep affection Zachariah has for his little miracle we would know as John the Baptist. He has been mute for Elizabeth's  pregnancy. When his tongue was set free, he spoke boldly and prophetically. There is so much in this passage.

Zechariah's love for his son and the knowledge that he will play a part in the story of Jesus comes out like a song. You can hear his first hand knowledge of God's mercy when his human doubt played out.

God forgave his unbelief and blessed him. He announces that Jesus will come in light from heaven. He is the morning light breaking into our darkness.

As Christmas draws near, "the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us."

Be still my soul.

Today, I am grateful for Zechariah’s Prophecy.

Promises Kept

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 352: Today, I am grateful for promises kept.

“Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has visited and redeemed his people. He has sent us a mighty Savior from the royal line of his servant David, just as he promised through his holy prophets long ago." -Luke 1:68-70

We have a God who keeps His promises. He does it on His clock. He continues to move. He continues to long for lost souls to return to relationship with Him.

He kept his promises to Abraham, to Moses, to David, to Mary and Joseph, and He keeps them to those who continue to answer the door when he knocks on our hearts. This season, celebrate promises kept.

Our tree is full of memories. Some reflect promises kept, and some are pure fun. They all represent our story. I don't know if I have a true favorite. Each one is hung for a reason. One is a picture of Walker from the year Donna Roth was his  teacher. Crayons make a picture frame. I smile remembering.

The one from Chase and Emma's wedding is our family including a new great-niece that God preserved and protected so Craig and Monica could be her Dad and Mom. I remember feeling confident about God keeping his promises when we included her in the picture. It took some time (His time), but God keeps his promises.

Elizabeth and Zachariah were shocked by a late in life pregnancy, but they rejoiced in the gift. He spoke a prophecy over his son who would prepare the way for Jesus.

Promises kept are a beautiful thing. One of my favorite things to see is elderly married couples holding hands or simply enjoying the peace of sitting with their favorite person. The gift of many years is not granted to all. When it is, it is beautiful.

Today, I am grateful for promises kept.

The Wilderness

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 351: Today, I am grateful for the wilderness.

The Wilderness is something I've contemplated quite a bit these past few years.

There are times when we feel alone, even when surrounded by people. This world is full of burdens because there is sin and the enemy is loose on the land, striking out with demonic forces.

I know I don't speak of demons often. I probably should more often. If we believe in angels, how can we ignore the other side of the battle line? My online Bible Study Group has been in Revelation these past weeks. I know it sounds strange, but it is good, my friends. There is hope and good news - HE wins!!! We know the end of the story before it happens.

In the wilderness seasons, pause and listen. You have not been abandoned. In fact, in the times of our most difficult circumstances, His presence becomes more tangible. There are times He whispers. There are times He struts his stuff. He is always present and a very real refuge.

Think about Joseph and Mary in the wilderness on their way to Bethlehem. There was no Interstate Road system or GPS. Many had walked the path before them, but there was no "Bigfoot" or "Casey's" when Mary was hungry and needed a snack. Did they pause to take nourishment from the food they had packed? Did they look to the sky and wonder how much farther they should travel that day? We don't know but we can wonder.

Did the Magi who followed His Star to Bethlehem lament that they had not yet reached their destination at the end of the day?  Did they discuss the ancient writings of the Jewish prophets? Were they concerned about they gifts brought along being well received? Again, we know none of these things, but we know they endured the wilderness to find their way to the Christ child.

One of my favorite songs in the past decade is "What Do I Know of Holy? by Addison Road." Some songs grab my soul with both hands, and it is one of them. The song was inspired by Isaiah 6.

"Then I said, “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.” -Isaiah 6:5 9 (NLT)

Isaiah was there when the Lord's presence filled the temple and it was a "I'm going to pee my pants" moment.  He was "undone" in the King James Version. The Message is a fun read. I chose the NLT for the quote. All of them attempt to capture the awe of the moment.

Isaiah had his moments with God in the temple and in the wilderness. Same God, no matter the location. When God's presence is tangible, stop and savor it. Don't  waste a moment. It can happen in a place of worship, but often it is in the wilderness moments.

Today, I am grateful for the wilderness.

The Blood & The Word

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 350: Today, I am grateful for The Blood and The Word.

The battle of good versus evil has been going on since the beginning. Evil tempted. Pride caused the fall. But, God didn't give up.

Frankly, I am not sure why not. The beloved creation has cost Him so much.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." John 1:1-5

He was in the beginning, with God. The one who was there  at creation submitted to a womb, a human  birth, a humble home, being rejected, bullied, beaten nearly to death before they crucified Him on that old rugged cross. How do we really grasp the idea or the suffering? Those choices purchased our sin debt, paid it in full and opened the doors of heaven.

For those who look, seek, find and choose New Life, there is no fear in the book of Revelation... only, mystery, hope and wonder!  When you know what you know is true, there is peace.

"And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony. And they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die." -Revelation 12:11

No God, no peace. Know God, know peace. In faith is the victory.

Today, I am grateful for The Blood and The Word.

Small Businesses in Small Towns

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 349: Today, I am grateful for small businesses in small towns.

I really enjoy watching childhood friends working for a small local business called "Janie's Mill". I grew up with Tracy and Dawn who work there. It is always fun to see their faces pop up as they report on their many travels delivering Janie's goods.

When Covid made so many items difficult to get - including flour- Janie's Mill is one of those businesses blessed many. People were home and baking. They needed flour and other grains. "Janie's Mill grows and stone-mills organic grains to provide wholesome, delicious, high-quality flours and grits to discerning bakers."

This little company did what they could and they are still doing it. They have made quite a name for themselves and it makes me smile.

I can't help but think of one small business that did what they could when there was a need over 2000 years ago. The innkeeper had a full inn and a desperate man at his door. The man's pregnant wife was about to give birth. The innkeeper offered what he had... his warm stable where there would be some privacy (if you ignore the animals). He gave them shelter when they had none.

"And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them." -Luke 2:6-7

Small business was an important part of the story of the Birth of our Savior. How many other places had turned Joseph away. We don't know. We do know one finally found a way to help. There was one willing to go above and beyond when a simple "no" could have been his answer.

Support small businesses when you can.

Today, I am grateful for small businesses in small towns.

No One Can Take Your Crown

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 348: Today, I am grateful no one can take your  crown.

Humans are constantly trying to set themselves apart or above others. A friend reminded me today that the first thing God commanded humans to do was to care for His creation. Take care of the garden, he told them.

It is hard to imagine the scenario of "walking with God" the way Adam and Eve did. The presence of God was a part of  their days. They had back and forth conversations. And then, arrogance led to sin and sin led to expulsion from the Garden.

Some spend their days wandering  and lost, but when we find Him, he invites us in and offers us a crown.

"I am coming soon [suddenly or quickly]. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take away your crown." -Revelation 3:11

Forgiven and with a seat at the table! How incredible!

This world wants to steal our peace. The enemy is constantly looking for a way to break our hope and our hearts. Do not give in. He is coming soon.

Straighten your crown as you wait.

Today, I am grateful no one can take your crown.

Wide Calf Boots

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 347: Today, I am grateful for wide-calf boots. This is one of my quirkier gratitude posts... but it has been on my mind today.

Did you know that some people have wider calves than others? For many... no matter their weight... their calves do not fit comfortably into the average boot.

Jumping, cheering and dancing activities can increase the calf size. So can excessive walking and wearing high heels. For those who have wide calves... finding boots that fit is a never ending pursuit. The Love-of-my-Life just says, "Get them." when I find some that work. The poor man has endured many long shopping trips when I am hunting for boots. It would be easier to hunt and bag a 12-point deer... and he isn't a hunter.

Honestly, the last time I hit the boot jackpot was at Bergner's many years ago. I like classic styles, but this year, any I had left ended up in the trash bin. There was no redeeming or resoling them. I had to give them up and start the search to replace them.

I am very grateful to have found one pair in black. They zip comfortably and are in a classic design that will wear well. Some winter days require boots. It was a sweet victory when they arrived and they fit perfectly.

It is humbling to remember there are many who have no boots, no shoes and no socks.

I don't want to forget the reason we celebrate. When the King of the Heaven arrived, He had no fancy clothing or shoes. They wrapped him in swaddling clothes and placed him in a manger.

"and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them." - Luke 2:7

Can we even imagine that scene in the stable? We can try, but I am sure we are missing details. How ill fitting did His human skin feel? He chose to take on our human fragility while holding eternity in his hands. The hope all nations lay in a food trough. Such a strange way to save the world, right? Strange and perfect, all at the same time. I am grateful for His choice that changed everything.

I am grateful for the discomfort he chose to bear on our behalf.

Today, I am grateful for wide-calf boots.

Sing Out Loud

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 346: Today, I am grateful we can sing out loud!

My friend, Kelly, has the best sense of humor. She always makes me smile. It is hard to believe we have been friends for over 40 years. It doesn't matter how long between visits, we catch up in a heartbeat. Childhood friends really are very special. They have walked with us in most of the seasons of our lives. They are to be treasured.

Kelly posted this today and I laughed out loud. She sings beautifully - so I am not sure she would get sent home, but the image of Buddy made me laugh. He can't contain the joy, can he?

Buddy's love for Christmas and Santa is insatiable. It is in all of his conversations. He is constantly thinking about Santa and others.

Today, I have to ask myself, do I get that excited about my Jesus... the reason for the season? Is my joy as insatiable as Buddy's. I want it to be. I want love to be contagious. I want to put others first. I want to seek His Face and not forget to be in awe of His Grace.

Some days, in the busy schedules of the season, it is easy to lose the joy. Fight for it. Hold onto the wonder of the season.

Remember the shepherds who were camping out in the fields with their sheep? Remember their surprise when the heavens filled with angels for an announcement and singing?

"Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” -Luke 2:13-14

The angels had to sing His praises. They felt the unspeakable joy. When you can't keep the joy inside, sing loudly for all to hear.

Honestly, our Lord doesn't even care if you can carry a tune. He delights in the expression that comes from our souls. Praise and thanksgiving often are found in a song.

Go ahead! Sing out loud.

Today, I am grateful we can sing out loud!

Semicolon Moments

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 345: Today, I am grateful for semicolon appointments.

This passage comes from the end of the Gospel of Matthew. It is a moment where the risen Jesus is about to give "The Great Commission" to go and make disciples. It is recorded that "When they saw Him, they worshiped him;" with a semicolon. A pause is written in the passage. After the semicolon the verse goes on to acknowledge "but some of them doubted."

A semicolon indicates a pause. The risen Jesus was standing in front of the disciples. They saw him taken, beaten, nailed to a cross, and they saw him die. How does that relate to this Advent season?

"When they saw him, they worshiped him;" -Matthew 28:17a

For some, it was an instant response. The simple saw him and were propelled to worship Him. Oh, what a beautiful image that creates.

Do we have that same feeling about the Messiah in the Manger? Do we recognize Him as the promised One? Do we pause to take it all in?

" Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." -Isaiah 7:14

Isaiah wrote the prophecy so many years before Jesus was born. Yet, it happened.

Mary said, "Let it be as you have said." and she was pregnant. Joseph did not choose to have her stoned, nor did he quietly divorce her (as the law allowed). He knew Mary. She had not been unfaithful to their betrothal. She chose to say "Yes" to God's plan for her and the man who would help her raise the long awaited Messiah.

Surely, she paused. She took it all in. "She pondered these things in her heart."

Today, I am grateful for semicolon appointments.

Stone Art

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 344: Today, I am grateful for stone art.

I saw this picture today and it captured my eye and my heart.
This nativity scene is made from stones. Look at the many shades of just a few colors that help create the scene. The colors are earthy, but somehow, they seem radiant. Beautiful, right?

I couldn't help but think of one of my favorite verses that promises that if we refuse to praise him, the stones will cry out.

“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” -Luke 19:40

Let the stones cry out!

Today, I am grateful for stone art.

Plugged In

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 342: Today, I am grateful we can stay plugged in.

Have you ever found yourself with a shortage of electrical outlets? Our first home we purchased in Peoria had no outlet in the bathroom. It was an older home and full of charm but it lacked the electrical updates we needed for modern life in the late 80's. Things like hair dryers and curling irons were used daily.

Our dear friend, Denny, came from Ohio and added the bathroom outlet. Randy's friend from work, Lin, eventually replaced some wiring and all of our fuses with circuit breakers. There is nothing like having power at your fingertips. We take it for granted, until it is gone.

Being plugged in is where the power is found. Light and life rely on being connected to the source. It is the same in our spiritual walk. We have to be connected.

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. " -John 15:5,8

Pause to take it all in as you enjoy the Christmas lights this season.

Today, I am grateful we can stay plugged in.

It's Beginning to Look Alot Like Christmas

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 343: Today, I am grateful it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

I love that song. It brings up images of Christmas decorations in stores, downtown and in our homes. Children of all ages are caught up in the magic of it all.

Each morning, on my drive to work, I drive by the Winkel home. They have a yard full of Christmas. It makes me smile. I know their children delight in their efforts. I enjoy it, too.

Decorating is often a family affair. I know our sons still help The Love of my Life get the decorations out of the attic. I am grateful for their helping hands.

Wreaths, lights, trees, and so many other items help our homes come to life for the Christmas season. The wreath of evergreen is the same shape as the crown of thorns Jesus would bear on the cross made from a tree. Jesus is the Light of the World!

"Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” -John 8:12

May the decorations point the way to "The Reason for the Season. "

Today, I am grateful it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

To Believe

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 341: Today, I am grateful to believe.

She was an ordinary girl. She would probably tell you she was nothing special. She was betrothed (serious business in the ancient Jewish culture). The betrothal was "all but married". Still, they followed the rules closely .

He prepared a place for her. She prepared items for their home. He was a carpenter, so we can guess their furniture was a little more special than the items. He knew how to work the wood. We know nothing of her stitching and cooking skills.

We know they were of humble means. When they took Jesus to the temple to be dedicated to the Lord (the custom for a first born son), they offered the sacrifice of the poor.

So they offered the sacrifice required in the law of the Lord—“either a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” -Luke 2:24

Their offering declared their position. Poor. But, they were not without hope. They were not without belief. They heard the shepherds tell the story of the angels who sang of the Christ-child's birth. They knew there was a star in the sky to guide those who believed. Those who made the journey found  them... they found Him.

It is not so different today. We must still choose to believe. We must look for His light in a world full of darkness. When we believe, we find new life. A life fuller and richer than we dared to imagine. Every step close to the door we know as death, is one step closer to the reality of eternity with him.

Will you make the journey? First, you must believe.

"Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying." -John 11:25

Today, I am grateful to believe.

The Wind is Still

Daily Gratitude Year 10-Day 340: Today, I am grateful when the wind is still.

This past week we have had some cold but windless days. It makes the colder month more bearable when the wind is still.

My Sister-in-Love, Jennifer, is quick to bring these kinds of days to my attention. She lives where the wind is almost never absent. The gift of the stillness does not go unnoticed.

I adore Winnie the Pooh and his friends. Piglet was known to fret over the blustery days. I, too, can lose focus on what is important when the winds start to blow. It is easy to obsess over things we cannot change or control. There is wisdom in the sage advice of "let it go."

This passage from Psalm 107 celebrates the stillness, after God calms the wind and the waves.

He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves.  What a blessing was that stillness  as he brought them safely into harbor! -Psalm 107:29-30

Yes, celebrate the calm. Savor the stillness.

Today, I am grateful when the wind is still.
