The Right Thing

Daily Gratitude-Year Eleven: Day 119- Today I am grateful for the value in doing "the right thing."

A C. S. Lewis quote is always a great place to start the week.

"It is not your business to succeed, but to do right; when you have done so, the rest lies with God."

I seem to need constant reminders of my role? I need to be reminded that I am not the keeper of the stars or master of the universe, but I know the one who is. I am not the one in charge of determining "the right thing." His Word is full of instructions for daily living to help guide our days and to help us live well.

We are instructed to seek His face, to call upon His name, and to rest in the shadow of His wings. Nowhere do the scriptures suggest we give God instructions. Not on any day of week, month our year. Still, I want to hold tightly to the reins, instead of letting Him reign.

"And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." -Hebrews 11:6

It is more about doing the "right thing" than it is about "getting it right. "

Today I am grateful for the value in doing "the right thing."

A Wedding

Daily Gratitude-Year Eleven: Day 118- Today I am grateful for a wedding.

There is something extraordinarily sweet about another chance at love after a loss. The joining if two lives in marriage is a special occasion. It is a precious and sacred moment. God designed the partnership. He blessed the union.

Today, my sister in love, Lola, pointed out that we are gaining a new brother as Robert and Jan become Mr. and Mrs. Toney. Our hearts are full. They treat each other with tenderness and make each other feel treasured.

A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” -Ephesians 4:2

Together, they are better. They will “wash each other’s feet” and serve those around them. It brings them a joy unlike any the world can provide.

Today, I am grateful for a wedding.

Florida Citrus

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 117: Today, I am grateful for Florida citrus.

Key lime, grapefruit, and oranges come to mind. They are so fresh and deliver the scents and tastes of summer.

Full day… quick post.

Today, I am grateful for Florida citrus.

Sisters and Nieces

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 116: Today, I am grateful for sisters and nieces.

I am going to do another post for the daughter of my heart - Miss Emma... but today is sisters and nieces.

In these pictures are sisters and nieces on both sides of the family. It is not all of them, but these images capture several of the crew. I love these girls. They make me laugh and I've cried with them, too. Not "in-law" but "in-love."

Monte's sweet Jan is getting married this weekend. We are so happy for her and Robert. Today is Monte's 2nd birthday in heaven. I know he is smiling to know that God sent Jan a good and Godly man to laugh with and love in this next chapter.

I am equally grateful that God gave Matthew a wife that would throw out the "in-law" and embrace full sisterhood.

And nieces.. the are like icing on the cake. All the fun, and none of the responsibility of being a parent. Every season of life is better when shared.

"Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep."-Romans 12:15

Today, I am grateful for sisters and nieces.

Traveling Light

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 115: Today, I am grateful we can travel light!

I am terrible at traveling light. It does not come naturally to a "just in case" girl. It is something I desire to change, but being prepared is in my nature. I don't want to be caught off guard.

"Traveling Light" is a book by Max Lucado that my dear friend, Linda Neuhauser, gave me when my sister died many years ago. It was a relatively new book at the time. Now, it is a classic on grief. The subtitle is "Releasing The Burden You Were Never Intended To Carry." That sums up the book.

How many times do I try to carry the tough stuff by myself? Being American and a farmer's daughter, I sometimes forget to ask for help. Floundering is not how our Lord intends for us to walk through this life. First, He wants us to yoke ourselves to him. What is heavy for us, is easy and light for him.

How many times is it my habit of "over-packing" that creates the heavy load? Traveling light means letting go of the extras and trusting in His provision.

One day, Jesus empowered the disciples and sent them out to heal the sick and cast out demons. He sent them out with nothing but the clothes on their backs and sandals.

“Take nothing for your journey,” he instructed them. “Don’t take a walking stick, a traveler’s bag, food, money, or even a change of clothes." -Luke 9:3

Nothing else? Talk about traveling light! They learned to trust and obey.

I am still in the "needs improvement" category, but I will keep trying.

Today, I am grateful we can travel light!

We Can Have Confidence

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 114: Today, I am grateful we can have confidence.

"The wicked run away when no one is chasing them, but the godly are as bold as lions." -Proverbs 28:1

It certainly brings an image to mind, doesn't it? I can't help but think of Daniel who would not bow to any authority that put an idol before him or told him he could not pray to God. Daniel didn't mean to be defiant. He simply could not kowtow to the pagan king.

I once heard someone say that the night Daniel spent in the lions den, he is the only one who slept that night. The king didn't .

The king really liked Daniel but those who hated him put the king in a real bind. He had given his word as to what would happen to those who disobeyed his kingly decree.

We all know the story has a happy ending. God had bigger plans for Daniel.

Honestly, we were never promised that everything would always turn out okay. We were promised we would never be alone in the trials of life. Not in the lions den. Not when standing before a fiery furnace. Courage doesn't guarantee the outcome we desire, but courage loosens the chains of fear so that we can fully live in the freedom we gained through Jesus.

We don't have to run. Even when things get a little scary. We can boldly choose to trust in the Lord with all of our heart. We can exercise boldness.

Today, I am grateful we can have confidence.

The Scent Of Fresh Lilacs

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 113: Today, I am grateful for the scent of fresh lilacs.

My nose is fairly discriminating. I am too easily offended by bad scents. I know deodorant is a very "American thing", but body odor literally turns my stomach. Mama Ina Mae always said "you don't have to be wealthy to be clean and well kept." If you have a gas leak, I will smell it. A good nose can be a blessing and a curse.

One of the scents of my childhood that I continue to adore is the scent of fresh lilacs. Ours are beginning to bloom in the backyard, and it reminds me of the huge one it the corner of the backyard on the farm. Fresh lilacs are pure delight!

On the other hand... imitation and fake attempts at the scent of lilacs are awful. It is the only soap I have ever returned to Bath and Body Works. Lilac candles smell awful to me, too.

But, the real deal... straight off the bush... floods a room with beautiful blooms and a sweet fragrance. They come and go swiftly, so we must enjoy them while they are here.

"The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever.” -Isaiah 40:8

Savor the scent and the colors.

Today, I am grateful for the scent of fresh lilacs.

Solomon's Request

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 112: Today, I am grateful for Solomon's request.

The Book of Proverbs has always been a favorite of mine. It might be the reason I began collecting quotes as a child. Many of the passages in Proverbs are still found in "old sayings" quoted by many, even those who are not familiar with the Bible.

When God was pleased with King Solomon, He told him he would grant him anything his hear desired. What did Solomon ask for? Wisdom.

This is what happened:

"That night the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!”__ Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?” The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies—  I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have!  And I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life!  And if you follow me and obey my decrees and my commands as your father, David, did, I will give you a long life." --1 Kings 3:7,9-14

King Solomon is a legend. Even Hollywood has been captured by his remarkable life and reign.

How many leaders today are intentional about praying for wisdom? There are organizations protecting all kinds of flora, fauna, and wildlife. Is anyone campaigning for wisdom?

Proverbs is a quick read, but it will take a lifetime to absorb the lessons between its pages. I am grateful we can read and reread it as we please.

Today, I am grateful for Solomon's request.

Matthew

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 111: Today, I am grateful for Matthew.

I love this picture (Matt, Mama and Walker Matthew) from Mama's last earthly birthday two years ago. Matt came down and we spent the day watching John Wayne Movies... "The Kentuckian" and "Hellfighters" were on the list. She was as tickled as she could be.

Matthew was born the day after Mama's birthday, so he was always considered a "birthday present." He was, indeed, a gift.

I practiced parenting on him, but he has forgiven me. He was my trial run for raising boys. I was finishing 1st grade when he was born. I graduated from High School before he made it to Jr. High. Despite the age differences, we have always been close.

He taught me to drive a stick shift after Dad and I finished an afternoon of his yelling and my tears. Matthew said, "Come with me." In 15 minutes... and I am not kidding... I was driving a stick shift and headed off to college in a manual Plymouth Horizon. I was 17... he was eleven. The rest of the story, you have to ask Matt. His excellent teaching came in quite handy when an opportunity to drive another stick shift was placed before me.

He puts family first and loves his Lord. He learned much from watching Grandpa, Dad, Uncle Larry and Uncle Mel. He loves to smell the fresh turned dirt in the spring and on a warm supper evening he might think he can hear the grain grow. He scents rain in the air. He is tough to beat in euchre if he is really trying but would rather enjoy the people around the table than win. He might have a stubborn streak that runs true in all of us. The Lindgren and Bess sides all have it... including me.

I adore him. His hugs are the best. His stories always make me laugh. He chose the best of sisters for me to get to love when he brought Jennifer home for the first time. He loves our boys and we love his girls.

Randy (the love of my life) and Jennifer (my sister in love) have discovered that we keep each other entertained when we vacation together. Is that a compliment? I am not sure, but we sure have a good time.

I am so grateful God has granted us so many good years together as siblings. We have faced some tough stuff along the way and we always find strength in facing the giants together. We have shared some bittersweet moments and some unforgettable laughter, too.

Life is better with brothers (the ones by birth and the ones by marriage).

Today, I am grateful for Matthew.

A Sharp Pencil

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 110: Today, I am grateful for a sharp pencil.

A pencil is a perfect tool for anyone who is imperfect. The opportunity to erase our mistakes is pretty amazing. We all make mistakes.

A mechanical pencil can be a great tool, but there are times an old fashioned pencil does the trick best.

Today was Mama's birthday and I think of the many times she overlooked, covered and erased our mistakes. She was more like Jesus than anyone I have ever known on earth. I tried to write more, but the words wouldn't come. So, I erased them.

When feeling creative, a sharp pencil does the trick. When the moment wanes or goes wrong... the eraser is my friend.

Today, I am grateful a sharp pencil.

A Full Night's Sleep

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 109: Today, I am grateful for a full night's sleep.

This morning I am boldly reminded of the power of a full night's sleep. It really is amazing. I try to play catch up on sleep on weekends, but it is not how our bodies were designed to work. Good sleep has  more to do with good habits and I am an epic failure at this one.

The Love of My Life is way better at this one than I am. He goes to bed at his planned time. I doze off in my chair when I finally sit down. Then I wake up, do a few things, and can't always get back to sleep in the way that would refuel my body.

Never underestimate the power of a good night's sleep. I love a nap and they certainly help, but a full sleep is a powerful thing.

I couldn't help but think of this scripture that tells of the disciples interrupting Jesus getting a full night's sleep after some long and exhausting days of teaching, healing and more:

"Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”  Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!” -Matthew 8:23-27

A full night's sleep can change the day ahead. It is not fun to wake up tired and it is counterproductive.

Today, I am grateful for a full night's sleep.

Just A Chapter...

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 108: Today, I am grateful some seasons are just a chapter.

When I was praying over today's gratitude, this passage popped up and seemed to be the right one. Our lives have chapters, but the work Jesus did on the cross means we get the happy ending. Hard times are chapters. New life is ahead.

But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died. So you see, just as death came into the world through a man, now the resurrection from the dead has begun through another man. Just as everyone dies because we all belong to Adam, everyone who belongs to Christ will be given new life. -1 Corinthians 15:20-22

How many times do we find ourselves at the end of something? Life is full of beginnings and endings... but many times, it is just a new chapter.

Perhaps we liked the previous chapter better. There will always be seasons in life. Some have storms and rough waters. Others are pretty amazing. Most often, the chapters in our lives are a mixed bag. Press on. Press in to His promises.

I loved this quote about "just a chapter."

"Breathe, darling. This is just a chapter. It's NOT your whole story." S.C. Lourie

Today, I am grateful some seasons are just a chapter.

Bees

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 107: Today, I am grateful for bees.

Yes, bees give us honey, but they do so much more. They are busy little pollinators which make them important to may flowers and crops, including pumpkins.

I don't want to get stung, but if you respect the bee, they usually leave you alone. Of course, our our dog, Daisy Mae, does not respect the bee. She wants to eat the bee.

It thought these painted stones were sweet. Be brave. Be happy. Be kind and be silly. They are all good ideas. Putting them into action may be harder sometimes over others.

This passage tells us about Samson finding some honey:

"... And he found that a swarm of bees had made some honey in the carcass. He scooped some of the honey into his hands and ate it along the way.-Judges 14:8-9

Just a few bees doing what bees do best.

Today, I am grateful for bees.

Love Fulfills the Law

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 106: Today, I am grateful love fulfills the law.

Keep first things first!

Super fast and simply post today, but we can spend a lifetime trying to master it.

"Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law." _Romans 13:8

Today, I am grateful love fulfills the law.

His Ways Are Not Our Ways

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 105: Today, I am grateful for reminders His ways are not our ways.

I think about it all of the time.

The Kingdom of God is huge. I have no idea how the things I pray for might impact His big picture. As my friend, Kristin Knief Ahrens, once shared... "I might think I have a better idea, but I don't have a universe."

Wise words I have held onto when things don't make sense to me. In His time, so much unfolds and our understanding becomes more clear.

This verse made me smile today:

" the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate." -1 Corinthians 1:18-19

We can trust Him with all of our days. We can submit to Him in all of our ways. He will direct our paths.

Today, I am grateful for reminders His ways are not our ways.

Arts in the Park

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 104: Today, I am grateful for Arts in the Park.

This perfect week of Spring temperatures has us thinking about summer things to come. We had enjoyed sitting outside in the evenings. Summer will be here before we know it.

Our little village has a Fine Arts Association. June 15th - July 27th we can look forward to another series of live music in the park. It is always fun.

The music is diverse. For some, when the music moves them... they dance. I have some sweet memories of dancing with Mama the last summer she was with us. She loved music so much and it was something we shared.

One of the things we have tried to be more intentional about is participating in local, community planned activities. Behind every event are friends, neighbors and community members who pour their hearts, time and resources into making local activities available.

"They sing to the music of timbrel and lyre; they make merry to the sound of the pipe. -Job 21:12

If you are local, mark your calendars. If you are not, look for the local events to attend in  your own community. Music and connecting with our neighbors are good things.

Today, I am grateful for Arts in the Park.

Love Out Loud

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 103: Today, I am grateful Larry loved out loud.

Heaven's gain is truly earth's sorrow. The Dicks/Malson/Grampp family were blessed to be raised and loved by a man who knew how to love out loud. His easy smile and charm were innate.

Larry loved his wife, his family and his God. He could read people as easily as the newspaper. I suspect he didn't say half of what he was thinking. I never saw him utter an unkind word. You could see he adored the Love of His Life... his Jeannie... in the way he looked at her... every time he looked at her.

Larry always had room for more "family" in his heart. His children's friends often thought of him as a second father. It was beautiful to see so many come to honor his life, to hug Jeannie and the family... and to share some memories. The love was thicker than the grief. I think that is the way it is meant to be.

"Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep." -Romans 12:15

I am so grateful for his example... for their example... and the promise of heavenly reunions. I am so grateful for their love story that lasted a lifetime.

Today, I am grateful Larry loved out loud.

Animals At Play

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 102: Today, I am grateful for animals at play.

These early days of Spring bring the animals out to play. Our fur baby, Daisy Mae, has a squirrel friend I call Nemesis. When I arrived home today, Nemesis was on the fence, and had a friend.

The squirrels would chatter at Daisy Mae and then Daisy would head toward the fence, which made Nemesis and friend take to a tree and higher ground. It was fun to watch them play. It is all about the game. No one expects to win. It is all about the chase and the fun.

It is so easy to get caught up in the daily "to do" lists. Anxiety builds. We forget to play.

"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." -1 Peter 5:7

What a great prescription. Then watch the animals at play. It is guaranteed to add joy to your day.

Today, I am grateful for animals at play.

Indoor Plumbing

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 101: Today, I am grateful for indoor plumbing.

I know. A weird one, right. Some of my not too distant relatives remember life before indoor plumbing.

When I was a little girl, we headed down to Lutesville, MO to visit my great-grandparents, Alva and Hulda Bess. The house they lived in had been upgraded to an indoor washroom, but we visited friends of theirs... people who had a dirt floor. It made an impression on me as a young child.

My grandparents still had an outhouse that was used when needed. We traveled with cousins, aunts and uncles that trip. One bathroom meant many of us tried out the outhouse. Some of us were more curious than anything.

It seemed so old fashioned. It seemed odd in many ways. Of course, many kids today would not know how to use their rotary phone. What is common now may seem strange in a few years.

Inventions come and go. Some are more user friendly than others. To everything, there is a season.

Today, I am grateful for indoor plumbing.

Tulips

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 100: Today, I am grateful for tulips.

They are so beautiful. Once the first brave flowers of spring are spent, the tulips show up in their full glory. They announce that winter has been defeated and all things will become new again.
They are planted in the fall and endure the winter's cold, but they use the time to rest and restore. They don't whine or complain. They simply wait their turn to bloom.

Nature is full of life lessons. It is God designed by our creator and cannot help but reflect His glory.

I can learn much from watching the tulips.

"Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end." -Ecclesiastes 3:11

Today, I am grateful for tulips.

Evidence

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 99: Today, I am grateful for evidence.

Perhaps I've mentioned my love of a good mystery. As an early reader, grade level books lost their appeal. Mama handed me my first Nancy Drew mystery book when I was seven as a birthday gift. "The Secret of the Wooden Lady" was the title. I could not wait to read more. "Tixie Belden" and the "Hardy Boys," too. I still love a mystery.

"Evidence based" is a term we hear often. We watch crime shows on television and try to solve the case as we watch. One show typically showed the killer at about 20 minutes into the hour show. I figured it out by noting who was on screen twenty minutes into watching. The evidence proved my guess to be true... most of the time.

There are times "evidence" can be misleading. We have to be wise and keep digging, even after something appears "obvious." Due diligence is what some might call it. A majority is not always right. A majority is not always wrong.

How about this bit of evidence:

but the angel said, “Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Look, this is where they laid his body. -Mark 16:6

What were the odds women could have moved that stone? How many soldiers did it take to put it in place and seal it? And, an angel with an explanation must have seemed unusual, but keep in mind Mary, the mother of Jesus, had been visited by an angel thirty years before the crucifixion of her son.

The evidence was a folded burial linen, an empty tomb, and a memory of Him saying something about "in three days..." something would happen.

There was evidence of his power over life and death, the most recent was Lazarus. But, to raise himself must have seemed like a long shot, in spite of the previous evidence of His power. Some would have to see it to believe it.

Hebrews 11:1 tells us that "Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."

Thomas, the disciple, had a hard time grasping the idea Jesus was alive. He had walked with Him and seen many miracles. Still, he wanted to see where the nails had been.

John 20:29 is the record, "Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.”

We love evidence, yet, trust without seeing moves the heart of God. Trust. Faith. Boundless belief.

"because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." -Romans 10:9

Today, I am grateful for evidence of the resurrection and the power of faith.

Just Getting Started

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 98: Today, I am grateful He was "just getting started."

"Jesus didn't say, 'I am  finished.' He said, 'It is finished.' He was just getting started. "

I love that thought. (Thanks for sharing it Linda Landell Sneed.) It has been with me all day long. So many worship songs this morning pointed to the fact He is alive, with us, and just getting started, including "Let me tell you 'bout my Jesus!"

The paradox is that in surrendering to the work of the cross and making Jesus the Lord of our lives is where joy and freedom are found. In that relationship, we can fully live. Fearless. Unbound. And, with courage. "Let me tell you 'bout my Jesus!"

He is risen, indeed. But that is only a piece of history, until we invite His peace into all the days of our lives. He makes a way. He is bigger than any circumstance we face.

He never abandons His beloved ones. Because He is risen, we can rise up knowing the victory is already won.

Today, I am grateful He was "just getting started."

3 Days

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 97: Today, I am grateful for 3 days.

A lot can happen in three days, right?

They had crucified the very one who was performing healing miracles and calling out their sins with such gentleness they could not help but want to know Him better.

The Romans may have run the crucifixion, but it was the temple leaders who wanted Jesus dead. A previously dead Lazarus walking around was more than the synagogue leadership could bear. They had to do something... fast.

Sometimes it is hard to imagine Jesus going from the triumphal entry to the cross in a matter of days. It must have been an emotional rollercoaster for everyone, including Him.

He tried to prepare them.

"And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again." -Mark 8:31

They could not fathom it, until it was unfolding before them.

On Saturday, they were hiding in fear. They felt lost, broken and exhausted. The grief in the air was so thick you could cut it with a knife. What now?

At the same time, satan is getting nervous. (I chose not to capitalize his name.) He knew the prophecy. The anxiety must have been as thick. What would three days bring?

Sunday is coming! Bring it ono!!!

Today, I am grateful for 3 days.

It Is Finished

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 96: Today, I am grateful "It is Finished."

My heart is always a combination of full and excited when Easter approaches every year. It didn't used to be like that for me. I dreaded it as a child. I remember feeling so guilty that Jesus had to suffer and die because of my sins.

It felt very personal. It still does, but  my perspective has changed as my understanding has grown. It is good to remember the mission and the sacrifice made.

As an adult, I understand the very real truth that no one took the life of Jesus. He gave it. He chose to become our perfect Passover Lamb. His sacrifice would serve to reconcile our sin debt. He took the cross so we could be freed from a debt we could not pay.

This passage is so powerful. Weaker men would have broken under the beatings and the cruelty of the nails Jesus endured. He didn't. Even as he hung on the cross, he offered opportunity to the other two men crucified that day for reconciliation. Only one took him up on the offer.

" Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit." -John 19:30

It is finished are power packed final words.

Today, I am grateful "It is Finished."

Priorities In Order

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 95: Today, I am grateful for reminders to put our priorities in order.

Priorities matter. They are not always easy to set, but how we set them speaks volumes. For those who love to have a plan, prioritizing is where you begin. Our priorities  are revealed in all we do... and don't do.

Maundy  Thursday was the night Jesus shared one last meal with his disciples before he was taken and crucified. It is what we call "The Last Supper." He introduced them to the new covenant of communion. He washed their feet. He spent time with them.

Things were about the change. For those precious moments, he paused to let them know they were important to him. His priorities for the evening might have appeared odd to the disciples and anyone watching. He had been trying to prepare them. They could not fathom that the same man greeted with palms and "hosannas" would soon be brutally beaten, tried in a joke of a trial, and crucified between two thieves.

This scripture is from when Mary (sister of Martha and Lazarus) washed his feet with expensive perfume and dried them with her hair.

"You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.” -John 12:8

Some in the room felt Mary's act was a waste of good perfume. Jesus tried to teach them about getting their priorities straight.

I often wonder what it would have felt like to be alive at the time of Jesus's ministry, death, and resurrection. I fear I would have been running around worried about the house and the Passover meal ahead. I needed the reminder about priorities.

Today, I am grateful for reminders to put our priorities in order.

30 Pieces of Silver

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 94: Today, I am grateful for the lesson in 30 pieces of silver.

It is Holy Week. Jesus was sold out for thirty pieces of silver. Crazy right? We cannot look at Holy Week without considering the price on His head and his betrayal by a friend.

It is easy to single out Judas, whose sin seems greater than the rest. How did Jesus wash his feet and dine with him? He mentioned that he knew one of them would betray him... when in truth, it was more than one.  We all betray him at times, in one way or another.

Jesus predicts Peter's denial quite clearly. He was a little more cryptic with Judas. He knew. Judas knew. Jesus did not intervene or attempt to rewrite the plan, except to pray in the Garden for "the cup to be removed" if the Father had another way. No other plan was offered.

Jesus prayed as he had taught his disciples to pray, "Thy will be done." He fully submitted. He offered Himself as a "living sacrifice." Why? So those who repent could ask forgiveness and be restored to a right relationship with Him.

We can be made blameless before our God whose holiness cannot tolerate sin in his  presence.

How often do we focus on our own betrayals when the enemy quietly whispers reminders of our failures? The things we trade for silver and the other betrayals are evidence of our imperfection and brokenness. We cannot do this on our own. We need a Savior.  (And Earworm begins to sing, "Let me tell you 'bout  my Jesus!")

"because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." -Romans 10:9

Today, I am grateful for the lesson in 30 pieces of silver.

He Gets Bigger

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 93: Today, I am grateful He gets bigger.

Every once in a while, I find another CS Lewis quote to add to my favorites.

Children get bigger as they get older. It makes perfect sense. Getting older means getting "bigger" until a  child reaches full maturity.

In the Chronicles of Narnia, Lucy says to Aslan,"You're bigger." Aslan explains it is because Lucy is older. With maturity comes a greater and deeper understanding of who God is.

Aslan clarifies, "I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger."

Oh, yes, deeper understanding brings a deeper sense of awe. Our God is awesome!

" I tell you, there is one here who is even greater than the Temple!" -Matthew 12:6

In this Holy Week, pause and take in our God who does not change. I am grateful he appears bigger as our understanding grows.

Today, I am grateful He gets bigger.

Infinite Importance

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 92: Today, I am grateful for infinite importance.

"Christianity, if False, is of no importance, and if True, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important." -C.S. Lewis

This world is full of flashing signs with messages pointing away from His truth. It is so easy to get distracted. How do we set our compass on what is right and true.?

"We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne." -Hebrews 12:2

C.S. Lewis sums it up so well. It is really an all or nothing.

The Truth of the Gospel created problems for the leaders in Jesus's day. Things really haven't changed much, have they?

Holy Week is of infinite importance.

Today, I am grateful for infinite importance.

Palm Sunday

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 91: Today, I am grateful for Palm Sunday.

Palm Sunday officially marks the beginning of Holy Week. It is full of reminders of prophecies being fulfilled, a new covenant, remembering the cross, and the anticipation of Sunday morning.

Although the Old Testament was full of prophecies that Jesus fulfilled, many would not see.

Are there times when we think if we don't look or see something, we won't be held accountable? There is an old saying that "Ignorance is bliss." Ask anyone who did not see a speed limit posted and received a ticket anyway if ignorance is bliss.

Palm Sunday is about the triumphal entry with loud "Hosannas!" Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. (Earworm is singing the old Michael W. Smith song with those lyrics, and it will be stuck in my head.)

Whether we recognize him or not, He is Lord of the Sabbath.

"I tell you, there is one here who is even greater than the Temple! But you would not have condemned my innocent disciples if you knew the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!” -Matthew 12:6-8

Holy week is special. Pause, ponder, and pray.

Today, I am grateful for Palm Sunday.

A Purpose

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 91: Today, I am grateful for a purpose.

"So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."  -1 Corinthians 10:31 NLT

This passage is short and to the point. It is not always easy to follow the simple instructions. I could not help but think of Jesus as we enter Holy Week. He lived exactly by those rules.

"So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."

I don't mean to mess it up or get distracted, but I do. Do I eat and drink to His Glory? Not always. Some are for my pleasure. We would be healthier if we did. Not simply to improve our bodies, but to improve our bodies for service.

The scripture passage goes back to arguments over clean and unclean food, mostly among the Jewish believers in Jesus. Some felt free from the "not pork" rule. To others, it simply felt wrong. To put the "Do it all for the glory of God." measurement on the instruction left it for believers to pray about.

Peter's dream was specific, but believers could choose to continue keeping some foods out of their diets if it helped them stay more in tune with the Spirit. It was about a relationship and their relationship to the food, not about The Law. They were no longer bound by the many food laws. They could freely eat from the tables of the homes they visited showing grace and love to the hand that prepared it.

I once learned (and looked it up to reconfirm) that some of the foods that were on the no-no list were foods that could lead to illness in the centuries before refrigeration and proper food safety requirements. Even today, most butchers agree that pork has a shorter shelf life in the fridge than most other meats. In Biblical times, it was probably a good idea to avoid it. Now we have ample refrigeration, freezers and many ways to prepare and store our pork.  Interesting, right?

Whatever we do today, let us do it with a purpose.

Today, I am grateful for a purpose
