A Purpose

Daily Gratitude Year Eleven- Day 91: Today, I am grateful for a purpose.

"So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."  -1 Corinthians 10:31 NLT

This passage is short and to the point. It is not always easy to follow the simple instructions. I could not help but think of Jesus as we enter Holy Week. He lived exactly by those rules.

"So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."

I don't mean to mess it up or get distracted, but I do. Do I eat and drink to His Glory? Not always. Some are for my pleasure. We would be healthier if we did. Not simply to improve our bodies, but to improve our bodies for service.

The scripture passage goes back to arguments over clean and unclean food, mostly among the Jewish believers in Jesus. Some felt free from the "not pork" rule. To others, it simply felt wrong. To put the "Do it all for the glory of God." measurement on the instruction left it for believers to pray about.

Peter's dream was specific, but believers could choose to continue keeping some foods out of their diets if it helped them stay more in tune with the Spirit. It was about a relationship and their relationship to the food, not about The Law. They were no longer bound by the many food laws. They could freely eat from the tables of the homes they visited showing grace and love to the hand that prepared it.

I once learned (and looked it up to reconfirm) that some of the foods that were on the no-no list were foods that could lead to illness in the centuries before refrigeration and proper food safety requirements. Even today, most butchers agree that pork has a shorter shelf life in the fridge than most other meats. In Biblical times, it was probably a good idea to avoid it. Now we have ample refrigeration, freezers and many ways to prepare and store our pork.  Interesting, right?

Whatever we do today, let us do it with a purpose.

Today, I am grateful for a purpose
