The Wait Is Over

Daily Gratitude Year 9 - Day 255: Today, I am grateful the wait is over... apple cider slushies are back in town.

In just a few hours, I will be in line for the first Apple Cider Slushy of the year. Jill and I always said "A slushy a day until the festival goes away." I keep our tradition. Our festival slushies are made with Tanner's cider, from a local orchard. They are... seriously... magical.

Mama Ina Mae had her first Apple Cider Slushy over the summer. She definitely enjoyed it. What's not to love? Tart, sweet and cold. I imagine the lines will be long with the weekend temperatures looking to be hot, hot, hot.

I smile remembering the extreme heat of the Pumpkin Festival of 1991. Donna and I sat holding newborns. Two month old Emma and one month old Chase were cradled in our arms under a shade tree near Dr. Patton's office to watch the parade. They didn't mind the heat as much as we did. Who knew the two would share love, laughter and so many parades? The memory is one I will forever cherish.

It is never too early or too late for an apple cider slushy. They are definitely a part of the Festival fun.

Little is written about Jesus as a boy. The one major account recorded was when they traveled for the Passover festival:

"When Jesus was twelve years old, they attended the festival as usual." -Luke 2:42

I love the "as usual" in this passage. Traditions are important. Jesus had traditions with his family, too.

My Sister-in-Love, Jennifer, and I have always said that if we repeated something more than once with our kids, and they liked it... it was deemed a "tradition". There is comfort and joy in traditions.

Today, there will be comfort and joy from Uncle Bud's slushy stand.

Today, I am grateful the wait is over... apple cider slushies are back in town.

Deep Breaths

Daily Gratitude Year 9 - Day 255: Today, I am grateful for deep breaths.

Every day, I try to not forget the power of a deep breath (and a good nap). Both are good for cleansing and perspective. As I was praying on today's post, I didn't have a good place to start. I took a deep breath and there was the answer. A deep breath is good for our souls and so much more.

First of all, there is live in a breath. The inability to breathe causes us to flood with panic. Our minds as much as our bodies know that breath is life. Again, I am reminded that it is His breath in us that gives us life.

"For the Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life." Job 33:4

Imagine being at the Red Sea with an angry Pharaoh's army behind you. The fear must have been tangible and the people breathless from the race out of Egypt. When it seems all is lost, God takes a deep breath and splits the sea waters so they Israelites could cross on dry land. The wonder of it all still amazes me no matter how many times I reread the account of the miracle.

"At the blast of your breath, the waters piled up! The surging waters stood straight like a wall; in the heart of the sea the deep waters became hard." -Exodus 5:8

When Jesus appeared to his disciples after his resurrection, he breathed on them. Again, His breath made a new way... another way. Look at this passage.

"Then He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit." -John 20:22

Never underestimate the power of a deep breath.

Today, I am grateful for deep breaths.

The right verse at the right time

Daily Gratitude Year 9 - Day 255: Today, I am grateful for the right verse at the right time.

Some verses arrive at just the right time. This was my scripture of the day:

"Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude." - 1 Peter 3:8

This scripture is one that is perfect to memorize and apply daily. It is good medicine and food for thought. How we treat each other matters. God knows our minds and sees our hearts.

The humble attitude changes everything. We know there is great value in humility, even when it doesn't come easy. His grace is sufficient.

Today, I am grateful for the right verse at the right time.

The Pumpkin Patch

Daily Gratitude Year 9 - Day 254: Today, I am grateful for the pumpkin patch.

It is finally here. Another Pumpkin Festival begins on Wednesday. Everything pumpkin is everywhere. I love how the town comes together for fun, carnival rides (Smiths are not very good at these), fair foods, Pumpkin chili, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin donuts and the list goes on. For me, the Apple Cider slushies... made with Tanner's apple cider... are my favorite treat.

Today, giant pumpkins were hollowed out to become boats. The race took place at Kennel Lake. Our neighbor, Jim, always has a hand in the festivities. You have to wonder who comes up with these ideas.

With each season there are festivals. I am glad for our little village, fall is our festival season.

"As long as the earth remains, there will be planting and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night.” -Genesis 8:22

Savor the moments. Fall, all too swiftly, slips away.

Today, I am grateful for the pumpkin patch.

20 Years Past 9/11

Daily Gratitude Year 9 - Day 253: Today, I am grateful for the memories of 9/11... a season when we prayed together, pulled together and held hands against evil.

It's been 20 years since the day "the world stopped turning" as the country song stated. We stood frozen in shock, horror and grief filled our eyes and our hearts. It was an attack on American soil, unlike any we've experienced before.

At the center of commerce in NYC, at the Pentagon and over a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania the terrorist attack unfolded. Disbelief, anger and fear filled the heart and mind of a nation. For a season, we pulled together to help, to offer hope and to share the stories of that day, so that we could etch them on our hearts so we might never forget.

In the 9/11 crisis, we celebrated the firefighters, police officers and other first responders who cared for the injured, offered comfort to the dying and showed gentle respect for the dead. We saw strangers pull together to evacuate as many as possible from burning buildings and falling towers. We heard a prayer and a "Let's roll." from a phone message left by the brave men who tried to take back Flight 93 from the hijackers. The plane crashed, never hitting its intended target. 45 died, but it is likely many more were saved.

Generations before us had the attack on Pearl Harbor and D-Day etched in their memories. For current generations, "Where were you on 9/11?" You do not need to add the 2001 for clarity. 9/11 says it all.

Twenty years later, the emotions are still real as we remember. So many Firefighters, Police and other First Responders did not live to tell their stories, but some of the people they saved will keep their memories forever strong. One firehouse in particular was full of firemen waiting on the arrival of new babies. Some of those babies would never be held in their Daddy's arms.

So much has changed since that day. Flying has never been the same. We are more suspicious of others as we travel at home and abroad.

I think the stories that stick with me the most are some of the miracles of people who were not where they usually are at 7:45 am on a Tuesday morning. They were at Doctors appointments and dental cleanings. They were at preschool drop offs, eye appointments and stuck in traffic jams. They missed their flights. They went to the bathroom and missed the plane landing in their Pentagon office where everyone else perished. The stories seem like miracles. Being spared when others perished, left people feeling grateful, humbled and in awe of the sequence of events that lined up perfectly so their lives were spared.

One of the most haunting memories for me was seeing people jump from the burning buildings, when they knew they had no way of making it out. I can't imagine making that decision.

Twenty years later, I can't help but recall the sense of unity we shared across these United States of America.  NYFD and NYPD shirts and hats were popular Christmas items that year. We stood together. We prayed together. We did our best to honor the lives lost. We put together remembrances.

We wept with those who were broken. We rejoiced with those who were spared. We cried out from the rubble for God to be our strength and our refuge. I've always loved this passage:

"if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.- 2 Chronicles 7:14

It is a passage of promise and hope, but we cannot ignore the call to humility and prayer. God is not tolerant of human arrogance.

Today, I am grateful for the memories of 9/11... a season when we prayed together, pulled together and held hands against evil.

Fall Decor

Daily Gratitude Year 9 - Day 252: Today, I am grateful for fall décor.

The Love of My Life and I took a lengthy walk the other evening. It was a delight to see all of the fall decorations popping up around the neighborhood. The feel is welcoming.  Decorating for the seasons adds color and flavor to our days.

Pumpkins, scarecrows, Indian corn, flame colored leaves and acorns are part of the landscape. Fall décor helps the landscape look less sad after summer's flowers are spent.

The colors of fall are rich and regal. They are a sight to see. People travel to see the majesty of fall in the places nature shows off in the leaves of the trees and in fields ready for harvest. So many shades of red, gold, orange and purple come to life.

"God is clothed with awesome majesty." -Job 37:22

Today, I am grateful for fall décor.

Septembers

Daily Gratitude Year 9 - Day 251: Today, I am grateful for Septembers.

There is something about September. This verse says it so well:  "By all these lovely tokens September days are here, with summer's best of weather and Autumn's best of cheer." -Helen Hunt Jackson

One week from today, the Morton Pumpkin Festival will be going strong. Apple cider slushies... "one a day until the festival goes away". I can't wait. All things pumpkin will be everywhere. Our little village loves our pumpkins. The days can be warm, but the nights are cooling off.

I can't really imagine living without the magic of fall. (Ask me in January and I might sing a different tune.) The transition from summer to fall is packed with whimsy and wonder.

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:"  -Ecclesiastes 3:1

Open the windows and feel the cool breeze. Sleep snuggled in a cozy comforter and awake to flowers still blooming. Enjoy summer's best weather while sampling autumn's cheer.

Today, I am grateful for Septembers.
