I just saw a quote that was new to me. Here it is:
"Some people create their own storms, and then complain about the rain."
I kind of wanted to shout, "Amen". Isn't it true. Some people are in the midst of real storms and don't complain. Others find drama in a fast food mix up. Drama is exhausting. Jesus didn't buy into it. There were times he shut it down.
With the exception of his turning the tables and reprimanding people for sinful treatment of the House of God, Jesus chose calm and brilliant speech over temper or fits. He used the power of the pause, waiting for those who were aggressive and mean toward him and then typically performed a healing miracle or poured out love on one of the "least of these" in the crowd.
Jesus oozed positive things. He encouraged. He forgave sins. He opened the eyes of the blind. Made the lame walk. He even raised the dead. No wonder the people followed him and pressed in on him for just a touch. But, it was a select few gave up everything to walk with him, talk with him and be with him during his ministry.
My favorite "positive response" to a negative situation that was brewing was when a woman was caught in adultery.
“Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”
They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust." -John 8:4-8
Brillant, right? Aren't you glad Jesus is our advocate before the Father? (1 John 2:1)
The ability to turn a negative situation into something educational and positive is a gift for some and a struggle for others. It is why we need each other to do this life of following Christ. We need time alone with Him, but we need each other, too. In loving each other, we find community... even when far from home.
The Verse of the Day when I opened Biblegateway for scripture references is once again, His addition. It is a perfect fit.
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. Psalm 139:23-24
Starting each day with a positive attitude is a great way to start the day. With his help, we can carry it beyond the second cup of coffee. Our God is with us, for us and making a way.
Today, I am grateful for positivity.
