Mint

Daily Gratitude Year 9- Day 337: Today, I am grateful for mint.

Mint is a fragrance and taste associated with the holiday season. Peppermint and Dark Chocolate are always an excellent combination. Mint is used all year long in kitchens around the world. At Christmas and New Years, it is found in teas, candies, cocoas and cookies.

The varieties of mint are many, as are the numerous health benefits. Mama Ina Mae was quick to offer mint tea for whatever was ailing you. It was one of her starting points for tummy troubles or colds. Mint tea is always comforting. If it is an excellent tea, I don't even need stevia or sugar. Tea was always on the menu at Mama's table. If you could stay for a second cup, she was even happier.

Mint candies and cookies are everywhere this time of year. We take them for granted. I remember when "Bob's Sweet Stripes" soft puff candies had to be purchased at the holidays to last all year. My dear friend, Donna, hooked me on these little gems. I am glad retailers realized our taste for mint doesn't end when spring arrives.

I am reminded that herbs and spices were valued in ancient days like silver, gold and gems:

"Year after year everyone who visited brought him gifts of silver and gold, clothing, weapons, spices, horses, and mules." -1 Chronicles 9:14

They are speaking of gifts to King Solomon in exchange for his wisdom and counsel. Spices were valuable then and they still are. We must eat to sustain life, but spices add to the pleasure. Mint is always welcome at the table.

Today, I am grateful for mint.
