Seek The Meek

Year 8-Day 63: Today, I am grateful we can seek the meek.

“Jesus calls us to his rest, and meekness is His method. The meek man cares not at all who is greater than he, for he has long ago decided that the esteem of the world is not worth the effort.” -AW Tozer

Years ago, I spent a little time contemplating what Jesus meant by meek. Frankly, the only frame of reference I had was the "meek and mild mannered" Clark Kent who was secretly Superman. Clark was often dismissed as awkward and not too quick. He was unassuming and posed no threat to many around him, but his secret strength was saving the lives. Each rescue at a time and on time.

Sometimes, Superman rescued the lovely Lois Lane. Other times, it was a falling train or plane that would have lead many to death. Superman interjects his strength into the current disaster and changes everything. He is the same man wearing the cape or behind his reporters suit and glasses.

Meek is not weak. Meek is the strength of the stallion who submits to the will of the master. The bit and reins does not change the power of the horse; it reflects the relationship between master and stallion. To me, that is a powerful analogy.

Look at these passages:

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. -Matthew 5:5-9

And this one compliments it well:

"to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved." -Ephesians 1:6

"In the Beloved" means in Christ. Fully adopted into the family with all the joys, promises and privileges. Amazing right? In the beloved, means we are treasured enough to rescue and adopt.

Remember how Clark would suit up and rescue Lois Lane? He was the same man with and without the cape. He knew who he was, with or without the glasses. As Clark, Lois would at times dismiss him although she felt a connection to Clark, too. As Superman, her heart skipped a beat.

Remember how we all felt when she finally realizes the two are one man? Rest. Protective of his identity. She didn't use his power for her gain. They became more of a team. She would look at him and say, "Go".

Like the stallion and the cowboy... like Clark and Lois... we were designed for a relationship. We are called to go, love, rescue, teach and defend. Together.

Meek is not weak. Meek is submission to the mighty by intentional surrender. In surrender and trust, amazing things can happen. Lives can be saved... not only in the moment like Superman, but for all eternity.

The meek can be used where the prideful and arrogant must have their own way. The meek find rest in trusting that the Master of the Universe holds the reins in his hands.

I have much to learn, so it is good to ponder it all again. "The esteem of the world is not worth it."

Today, I am grateful we can seek the meek.
