As a child, I didn't always enjoy the chore of hanging the laundry out on the clothesline ... but the sheets were a different story. Knowing the happy smell that would wrap us at the end of the day made that task more joy than work.
This verse keeps coming to mind:
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. -Psalm 51:10
To have a right spirit renewed is like taking in a deep breath of clean, line-dried sheets.
David prayed this prayer after confessing his sins regarding Bathsheba to God. Now, God was not surprised by his confession (God already knew), but David need to air it out before him with a sincere and repentant heart. Then, the relationship could be restored.
The first breath after reconciliation... a bit like the smell of clean sheets dried on the clothesline on a summer day... the fragrance of forgiveness.
His grace and mercy never fail.
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. -Hebrews 10:22
Today, I am grateful for clean sheets... and the sweet fragrance of forgiveness.
