Daily Gratitude Year 7 - Day 40: Today, I am grateful things are not always as they appear.
Recognize this poem?
"All that is gold does not glitter, not all who wander are lost; the old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not reached by the frost. -JRR Tolkien
To sum it up, things are not always as they appear.
I don't know about you, but that is a perfect reminder for me on a sunny, brisk February morning.
Randy noted that something green was popping through the earth around our little pond just outside the front window. It is way to early for real life to resurface. Still, something green is determined to poke through and meet the sun.
I am grateful that the old can be strong... and for deep roots that survived many winter storm or summer's heat. Nature is full of God's majesty and lessons, too. Nature often reflects the nature of God. Both love order... and delight in surprises. The deeply rooted old trees are some of the most beautiful. The young trees can be resilient with new life that allows them to bend but not break in the wind. Some of the most beautiful blooms appear on old vines.
Some of our sweetest life lessons and experiences come when we put away the schedule and enjoy a little wandering.
Jesus needed his disciples to trust and obey. Kind of a tall order for strong, smart, independant men. Jesus needed to be their "enough". The fire in their souls would be lit by Jesus... or by their eyes on the world. He wanted their whole hearts.
And he called his twelve disciples together and began sending them out two by two, giving them authority to cast out evil spirits. He told them to take nothing for their journey except a walking stick—no food, no traveler’s bag, no money. He allowed them to wear sandals but not to take a change of clothes. -Mark 6:7-9
He wasn't teaching them to go unprepared. He was teaching them to go with full trust in Him. There is a difference.
I am grateful not all who wander are lost.
Today, I am grateful things are not always as they appear.
