Libraries are Free

Daily Gratitude Year 7-Day 222: Today, I am grateful libraries are free.

I love the library. I don't go as often as I would like, but it is one of my happy places. There is something about a building full of books that evokes a feeling of reverence. Or, is it just me?

Absolutely any adventure you long to experience is at your fingertips when you walk into a public library. Check out a book and take the adventure with you.

We can read books to learn from our past so that we do not repeat our mistakes. Books can shed the fresh light of different perspectives on an old story.

A free library is a place to find books that are out of print but still popular. It is a place to research a topic that requires books from various genres like science, culture, geography and literature. Yes, much can be done on the internet, but a book is still a valuable reference and librarians are priceless!
What happens when people stop reading books? What would happen if they stop printing books? It would be a tragedy.

You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them. -Ray Bradbury

What about the books not written? It always makes me think of this passage at the end of the Gospel of John:
"Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written." -John 21:25

The image of so many books that no building or even the world could contain them... that is a powerful image. Internet relies on cell batteries and wi-fi connections. A book, you can hold in your hand and share with a friend. Our friend... the public library... is the best kind of book sharing.

Today, I am grateful libraries are free.
