Daily Gratitude Year 10 - Day 13: Today, I am grateful for the God who sees me.
This is one of those times I wish I could spend days on a passage to really take it in. There is so much to unpack and process. Hagar is one of the women in the Bible who we too quickly pass over.
Her life is full of trials, disappointment and heartache. Her mistress mistreated her and put her in an uncomfortable situation. He had no vote. No choice. Abram and Sarai's impatience put her in a place she didn't want to be. Rejection hurts. When a child is involved, a mother is naturally fierce. Even a young one with no experience.
Hagar knew how deep and wide brokenness could be. She makes my heart ache. She needed comfort and hope like she needed air. She needed affirmation that the God they spoke of in her presence was real. She had an up-close experience to answer her questions.
The angel of the Lord found Hagar beside a spring of water in the wilderness, along the road to Shur. The angel said to her, “Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where have you come from, and where are you going?”-Genesis 16:7-8
Still, God met her at her most broken places and made real promises of hope and a future.
"Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lord, who had spoken to her. She said, “You are the God who sees me.” She also said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me?” So that well was named Beer-lahai-roi (which means “well of the Living One who sees me”). -Genesis 16:13-14a
Like a deep breath or a drink of fresh water, we can know that we have a God who always sees us. We are never abandoned or alone. We can run, but we cannot hide. (Yes... that old saying has Bible roots.)
Today, I am grateful for the God who sees me.
