"Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time." -Thomas Merton
What a brilliant quote. It captures the paradox that is art. While creating we not only lose ourselves in the process, we discover and uncover parts of our personality we perhaps did not even know existed.
So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. -Genesis 1:27
In His image, we were created to create. Every so often, I am reminded of the great gift of creativity that lies in each one of us because He breathed His breath into us. It won't be neglected. It burns within us. It requires tending.
For some it is baking and others make quilts. Some write while others organize. Creativity comes in so many forms. We are not to neglect our gifts or doubt the giver of all good gifts. Someone once said, "Find what makes your soul sing, and do that thing."
Today, I am grateful for the magic and mystery in art.
