The Invitation

Year 6 - Day 218: Today, I am grateful for the invitation.

Isn't it amazing to be invited? To feel your presence is desired, requested and... in some cases... required, makes a person feel wanted and special.

It is the season of weddings. The holy, sacred sealing of a covenant between a couple and God is pretty special. There is joy in the invitation.

Being a person who loves paper crafts, I actually enjoy the invitation for the art of it, adding to the moment it arrives in the mailbox. Then, adding the date to the calendar making it a "red letter day"... a day of importance. There is still one important other step. The response must be sent in to secure a place at the wedding feast table.

The response to the invitation matters. There is no "maybe" or "I might"... or "we'll try". A commitment must be made.

As I searched the scriptures, these two passages... unrelated yet together they create a snapshot of what it means to be invited to our Lord's table. We must all accept or reject the invitation to "Come." when it arrives. In these passages, a rich man and Peter both have to accept or reject His invitation.

To the rich man:
And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” -Mark 10:21

Then to Peter:
He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.-Matthew 14:29

The response to the invitation changes everything. I love this quote:

God is always seeking you. Every sunset, every clear blue sky, every ocean wave, the starry hosts of night. He blankets each day with the invitation, "I am here." - Lou Giglio

It is our best "yes". We can choose to respond with joy, excitement and an "I'm all in."

Today, I am grateful for the invitation.
