Watermelon

Year 6 - Day 223: Today, I am grateful for watermelon.

Quick post. Such a full and wonderful day, but no time to elaborate before midnight. So... a quick point of gratitude.

One of my favorite foods of summer is... watermelon. Today, my friend Linda Neuhauser provided the best I've tasted this year. Seriously sweet, firm and perfect. It was amazing when added to the day's fruit salad for a wedding open house.

The fruit salad came together kind of like "Stone Soup" in our church kitchen. It was a blessed way to begin the day. Another point of gratitude is the way many hands make light the work. The fellowship is was sweet as the watermelon.

I searched for a scripture on melon and this is what I found:

Now the rabble that was among them had a strong craving. And the people of Israel also wept again and said, “Oh that we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. But now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at.” -Numbers 11:4-6

This is a passage from numbers. The Israelites have been delivered from slavery, beatings and bondage in Israel, and they are complaining that they are tired of the manna God was providing daily from heaven. I love this chapter... and find it convicting. On the way out of the church today, I was complaining out the endless heat of this summer. I am still mad we skipped Spring. Okay, we might have had five days of spring.

I am not so different than the Israelites at times. I forget his goodness when I am faced with an inconvenience or something that is uncomfortable. God was working while they wandered in the wilderness. God longed for them to trust and obey... and a little gratitude might have been nice. How did they miss the mark and become ungrateful for his provision?

The summer's heat has certainly provided us with some amazing fruit to savor. I don't want to forget to savor it while it is here.

Today, I am grateful for watermelon.
