Helping Hands

Daily Gratitude Year Six-Day 344: Today, I am grateful helping hands.

In this season, I am struck by the many helping hands that reach out to those in need. Hard times come and hard times go. Tragedy strikes. It is a part of this imperfect world.

"People can never predict when hard times might come. Like fish in a net or birds in a trap, people are caught by sudden tragedy." -Ecclesiastes 9:12

Solomon is wise. Tragedy catches us off guard.

Although most of the world has forgotten, those of us in Central Illinois have a very fresh memory of the November 17th tornado of 2013. It swept through our community leveling homes and destroying our sense of "normal". Our neighbors in Washington, IL were hit the hardest. Everyone had friends, loved ones and co-workers impacted by the storm. We felt helpless as first, but then... people banded together to do what they could.  Tragedy brought us together. There were so many helping hands.

It is day ten of Dressember. Women in dresses (and men in ties) are raising awareness of modern slavery. The sex trade victims and human slaves that keep manufacturing costs low have no way out unless they receive help. It is a complicated, woven to keep humans insubordinate to the ones who hold the money and the power. Dressember builds awareness and raises funds for the organizations that are breaking the chains, saving lives and rescuing souls. Reach, rescue and restore is the goal... and helping hands make it happen.

The Salvation Army bell ringers are reminding us to remember those who have less or barely enough. The Love-of-My-Life has trained me not to walk past a bell ringer. I am keeping cash on hand. I love his generous heart.

Today, I am grateful helping hands.
