Things We Can Control

Daily Gratitude Year 7-Day 282: Today, I am grateful for the things we can control.

Control. Such an ugly word at times in a country where we are prideful about our freedoms. Yet, part of being truly free is knowing... in freedom... we can make better, more loving choices.

"Just because we can, doesn't mean we should." It is a phrase I remember hearing often in the arena of medical ethics. Being "free" doesn't mean we are without responsibilities. On the contrary, freedom is a gift. With that gift comes the need to use it wisely. We can be free and controlled at the same time. The two do not have to be opposing forces.

"5 Things we can control every day:
Attitude. Words. Actions. Manners. Effort."

That is a great list. Yes, these things require us to be intentional.

For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.  For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” -Galatians 5:13-14

We are free to choose being loving over being right. We are free to choose listening over being heard. We are free to go beyond what is expected to honor the one who couldn't control us, but loved us enough to die in our place. Every fresh touch of His grace leaves me breathless.

Today, I am grateful for the things we can control.
