Mutual Weirdness

Year 8-Day 156: Today, I am grateful for mutual weirdness.

"We're all a little weird and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness... and call it love." -Dr. Seuss

Isn't that the best quote? Dr. Seuss makes me smile. This quote displays his brilliance. He gets it. "Mutual weirdness... and we call it love."

Isn't it amazing when someone gets you? The people in our world who understand everything we are thinking with only a glance are good for our souls. They are the people we can sit with... doing absolutely nothing special... and feel content. A recent phrase used to describe mutual weirdness is "my tribe".

June 5th is National Donut Day. Donut lovers of the world will make their way to Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme and local shops for their favorite donuts. Some don't understand standing in line for the breakfast sweet. Others will be up early to participate. Some will stick with oatmeal.

What about the oatmeal people? Oatmeal eaters are another tribe. Some would gladly choose oatmeal over donuts almost every day. Crazy? There are as many ways to dress up a bowl of oatmeal as there are donuts... but some prefer it plain. They are all members of oatmeal's fan club. Honestly... I'm in the oatmeal club. I don't hate a donut... but I prefer oatmeal. Weird, right?

Does our breakfast preference really make us "weird"? Maybe not, but it was an easy example to show many different "kinds of people" based on a personal preference. We all eat breakfast, but our favorites differ. Actually... eggs are still my favorite. (You can take the girl off the farm, but you cant take the farm out of the girl.)

There are things we are called to agree on. Jesus calls us to act outside of what is expected by the world. He wants us to lean into Him, His way, His truth and His light. This is a perfect scripture to remind us of the ways we are called to be aliens in this world. We are called to be "mutually weird".

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."-Philippians 4:8

Choose love. Choose hope. Choose peace. Choose honesty. Choose patience. Be weird.

Today, I am grateful for mutual weirdness.
