Persimmons

Year 9- Day 15: Today, I am grateful for persimmons.

Mama Ina Mae is a big proponent of trying something new. We grew up with "no thank you helpings".  We were not allowed to be rude at someone else's table or at Mama's. When someone prepared food for you, the appropriate response was thank you. The result, all three of us were pretty adventurous when it comes to food. .

This week, I tried something new. Persimmons. They have never been on my radar before, but I grabbed a small bag on impulse. They were the dried variety. I have no clue if I like them fresh, but dried, they are amazing. A little sweet. A little chewy. They are a perfect snack. Check out Bella Viva Orchards for online orders, as they are having a sale on the organic version.

Apparently, there are some health benefits to eating persimmons. They soothe acid reflux.  Some people make a persimmon punch with ginger, cinnamon sticks, honey and persimmons that they drink daily to fight heartburn. Healthy and tasty. A good source of fiber and loaded with vitamins A and C which are important for the immune system.

They are believed to be heart healthy, full of antioxidants and they may help reduce inflammation. Plus, they are tasty.

I am reminded of the gift of fruit bearing trees:

"The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good." -Genesis 1:12

It was good to try something new.

Today, I am grateful for persimmons.
