Year 9- Day 120: Today, I am grateful for the first fire of the season.
Tonight was the first Friday night fire of the season.
We have gathered with the Leander's on Friday nights since before Ryan and Chase (and Emma) were born. So, at this point, the tradition is over 30 years old. After long work weeks, we find calm and comfort hanging out with people who would love us even when we are a little bit tired and crabby. The faces around the table are older. The boys are now men. And, perhaps the gathering is even more precious. We've weathered storms and shared our joys.
Our memories are rich... and our dinners are simple. We mostly carry in so everyone is happy with their choice.
A s'more dessert was a hit with everyone (thanks Anna). Mama Ina Mae enjoyed the fire and reminded me that Uncle Larry and Aunt Judy do campfires, too. There is something about a fire that brings people together with a sense of family. The snap, crackle and pop draws us into its magic. The many colors provide a simple entertainment. We slow down when we gather around a fire.
Ann Voskamp says: "Hurry empties a soul." She is right. There is no sense of urgency when gathered around a fire in friendship. There is no reason to hurry.
I am grateful for the ordinary moments that grow into extraordinary traditions. I am reminded of this scripture:
"For our God is a consuming fire." -Hebrews 12:9
Today, I am grateful for the first fire of the season.
