Year 6-Day 278: Today, I am grateful for the music of raindrops.
Back in the days before personal communication devices and computer access to videos, we entertained ourselves in different ways. One of my favorites was a walk in the rain with my Randy under a shared umbrella. There is nothing like a the mellow drumbeat of dancing rain.
Is it any wonder they titled a movie "Singing in the Rain"? There is something freeing and soul cleansing all at the same time. Earworm is imitating Gene Kelly's voice. "I'm singing in the rain... I'm singing in the rain. What a glorious feelin'- I'm happy again." There is nothing like letting go of the angst over hair and disrupted plans... and simply enjoying the rain.
I've often believed God sends the rain to make weary farmers take a break for their health and safety this time of year. A simple intervention for protection and restoration... and the ground gets a drink.
It is raining cats and dogs this morning. The scent is one of my favorites... petrichor. How I would love to curl up and cozy in for the day, but work calls. I will choose to not worry about my hair or the inconvenience. Rain refreshes the land. It is good. Fresh water sustains life.
I am reminded of what Jesus told the woman at the well:
The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”
Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”
“But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water? And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?”
Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. 14 But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
“Please, sir,” the woman said, “give me this water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to come here to get water.” -John 4:9-15
It was music to her ears and her heart responded with a "Yes!". She shared the good news and lives found new hope and new joy. Their hearts beat with a new rhythm. One as steady, strong and surprising as the syncopated sounds of raindrops. Drink it in, like a symphony.
Today, I am grateful for the music of raindrops.
