The Mysterious

Daily Gratitude Year 6-Day 310: Today, I am grateful for the mysterious.

I grew up on Nancy Drew books. "The Secret of the Wooden Lady" was a gift for my 7th birthday.  As an early reader, mom was challenged to find books that were appropriate for a young girl with an insatiable appetite for reading. I would beg Mama Ina Mae for a trip to the library to check out an unread mystery. Nancy Drew were favorites. Nancy was an adventurer and learned so many things along the way. I learned about everything from ships to archaeology. The moment the mystery was solved and the questions were answered was exhilarating.

My love of mysteries didn't dissipate as an adult. It is still a favorite reading genre. A couple of years ago, I discovered "The Book of Mysteries" by Jonathan Cahn. It is a fascinating book with an unusual format. The story characters are fictional, but the "mysteries" illuminate the relationship between Jewish history, the Hebrew language, faith traditions, culture and Jesus. Fascinating. It has 365 entries so it makes a great devotional book... if you can swallow one a day. Some of them take me awhile to unwrap. Short but full of eureka moments.

Now, I can't say he has everything perfectly figured out, because he is human, but it is a fascinating book. His Jewish roots give the author understanding that allow him to unwrap things that are confusing. It is full of food for thought.

This was my verse of the day:

"God has now revealed to us his mysterious will regarding Christ—which is to fulfill his own good plan. And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth." -Ephesians 1:9-10 NLT

Because we were made in the image of God, we have the ability to think with free will and move outside of human nature. We can choose to do the right thing - even when we want to do the wrong. We can love when it would be so easy to hate. We can submit to a God who loves us enough to find a way to be with us and to save us... even at the cost of His son. That is crazy love. The mystery of how He could love us that much... even in our messy sinful places... that is a mystery for sure.

"God has now revealed to us his mysterious will regarding Christ—which is to fulfill his own good plan."

Today, I am grateful for the mysterious.
