Maundy Thursday

Daily Gratitude Year 10 - Day 105: Today, I am grateful for Maundy Thursday.

It is the day we remember the Thursday evening Jesus spent with his closest friends. These men were his disciples and his friends. They would share a Passover meal in a borrowed room.

Today, we remember the meal they shared and Jesus' words as he broke bread and served them wine.

As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it, for this is my body.” And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And he said to them, “This is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many.  -Mark 14:22-25

They did not want to hear what he had to say. Did they miss the point or could they simply not understand? Jesus spoke clearly.

Jesus said "One of you will betray me." Most asked, "Is it me?"

What were they feeling? What were they thinking? We only know bits and pieces.

This verse from John's perspective struck me today.

"He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end." -John 13:1b

He loved them to the very end. All of them. Even Judas. Those we love have the power to break our hearts. Jesus gave us a perfect and holy example; love them anyway, until the very end.

Today, I am grateful for Maundy Thursday.
