Crossing Guards

Daily Gratitude Year 10 - Day 130: Today, I am grateful for crossing guards.

We have some of the best crossing guards keeping our children safe as they head to and from school. Youth are easily caught off guard at best. Add in technology distractions and the before and after school pedestrian zones hold unanticipated dangers. Crossing guards are unsung heroes every day, especially when the weather is inclement.

Our guard who works the crosswalk at the Jr. High doesn't just keep the children safe, he offers a smile and a welcome to anyone who crosses him path. For the students, he is what they have come to expect. Most don't realize his enthusiasm and joyful spirit are not found at every corner. He is exceptional. I am so grateful he landed on ours.

I can't help but think of Moses. He tried to lead and keep the people safe after their exodus from Egypt. He wasn't perfect, but he tried. He trusted God and the Red Sea parted, water flowed from stones and manna fell from Heaven. Moses asked for guidance and God granted it.

In reality, God was their crossing guard. Time and time again, God provided protection and everything they needed. He would see them safely to their destination. Still, the people complained and were rarely satisfied. They looked to God with expectations but often forgot to seek His face with grateful hearts.

Then Jesus became the sacrificial lamb so we might be freed from our sin debt and allowed to cross over from death to life.

“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life." -John 5:24 (NIV)

Jesus is our crossing guard. Hear, believe, receive and cross over.

Today, I am grateful for crossing guards.
