Hope Found in a Garden

Daily Gratitude Year 10 - Day 122: Today, I am grateful for the hope found in planting a garden.

"To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow." -Audrey Hepburn

Gardens and Audrey Hepburn are a great combination.

The garden has long been thought of as a sanctuary. Is it the wonder of a hard seed that comes to life with a little water, soil and sun that captures our attention? A tiny miracle in every new life that sprouts.

The true gardeners in my circle are getting their hands dirty every chance they get. My attempts are smaller, but I love seeing flowers and vegetables producing joyfully in living color. It is good.

Genesis begins in the garden. Gardens are full of life... with some struggles sprinkled in the mix. If gardening were easy, everyone would do it. Still, most feel the benefits far outweigh the sacrifice of time and effort.

"The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it." -Genesis 2:15

Everyone needs something of value to do. Tending and watching over the garden was a big job. In time, he would have a partner, and that relationship would bring a new purpose and fulfillment to the job. God designed a partner just right for the man. It was good...  until they let pride and arrogance take them down the sin path.

Funny, how many seasons and years bring about a different perspective. As a child who had to follow parental instruction, I didn't understand how they could not see the evil in the serpent. So many childhood stories were filled with obvious villains and bad-guys, it made Adam and Eve seem naive. Yes, perspective changes.

Now, I know how easily we humans are distracted by what is around us and who is calling our name. It takes intentionality to stay focused and on course. We must be ever vigilant.

The garden continues to be a setting we associate with hope. Not every season is perfect, but there is always something to be thankful for when the garden begins to produce.

Today, I am grateful for the hope found in planting a garden.
