Daily Gratitude Year 10 - Day 125: Today, I am grateful for the spice of life found in the kitchen.
"No matter where I entertain my guests, it seems they like my kitchen best."
The saying is quite old, but the truth still rings clear. A kitchen has always been the heartbeat of a home. It is where we share the ordinary, simple meals that make up the majority of our days. In our memories, the ordinary becomes the extraordinary.
I love his scrapbook page from May 2013. The kids were little. They are now all college graduates. Mama has gone to heaven. The one person who has changed the least is our precious Aunt Helen. She seems to be almost ageless.
The images are from one Easter at our house. Mama and Aunt Helen were always excited to join the kids in whatever activities Jennifer and I had planned. This Easter, we introduced "Resurrection rolls" to the Easter menu. It has become a tradition we've repeated again and again.
We told the Easter story as we made the rolls. It still makes me smile to remember the laughter and how the kids listened as we spoke of the burial customs, the spices, wrapping bodies and eventually.. the empty tomb.
Here is scripture snippet:
"But very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. So they went in, but they didn’t find the body of the Lord Jesus." Luke 24:1-3
The ladies, who came to "dress the body" for Jesus, came prepared to treat a dead body according to the customs of the day. They did not expect the empty tomb.
Look at those faces! You might see some cinnamon or sugar if you look close enough. The kids, Mama and Aunt Helen would make a mess, but it was worth it to see their delight. Celebrations and food traditions shared really are a huge part of the spice of life. It is not just about the flavors. It is the feelings, too.
Today, I am grateful for the spice of life found in the kitchen.
