Discernment

Daily Gratitude Year 9 - Day 289: Today, I am grateful for discernment.

Discernment is an underused word in the English language. I am not sure our youth are very familiar with the meaning. How can they learn to act with discernment, without being exposed to the concept?

I know they say, "Wisdom comes with age." but I am a big fan of young people. I believe discernment can be developed at all ages. Part of discernment comes from practice and some it comes from our gut. The best discernment is whispered by the Holy Spirit.

"Discernment is not knowing the difference between right and wrong. It is knowing the difference between right and almost right" -Charles Spurgeon

The Word is a great place to find guidance when trying to decide between good, better and best. Right and almost right may take a little longer to work through and figure out. How many times do we pray for guidance, when we need to know the right thing to do?  These are prayers for discernment. How many times do we rush the answer because we fail to "wait upon the Lord".

We are promised this: "Those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength." We are not given a clock for the wait time. It is about trust and patience. When we lean into Him, we can find peace in the process. Sometimes, He clears the path... sometimes, He makes the path clear.

Today, I am grateful for discernment.
