The Unknown Tomorrow

Daily Gratitude Year 9 - Day 277: Today, I am grateful for the unknown tomorrow.

Have you ever wondered why we were not granted the gift of seeing the future?

Even Biblical prophets, given visions and words by God, may not have completely understood what their prophecies would look like when they came to pass. Some prophets would not see their prophecies fulfilled in their lifetimes. It didn't make their insight into the future less true. Tomorrow unfolds on God's schedule, not ours.

His ways are not our ways and his days are not our days. We cannot boast about tomorrow when we do not know what tomorrow holds.

"Don’t brag about tomorrow, since you don’t know what the day will bring." -Proverbs 27:1

Don't be discouraged by this proverb's wisdom. The truth is, if we knew what tomorrow held, it would drive us mad. We have all had losses this past year and half. We have had plans derailed and disappointments. Something inside us is programmed to look ahead to tomorrow, but tomorrow is always full of the unknown.

How many times have we said, "If I had only known then what I know now."? If we could see the future, we might do things differently. We might slow down and spend more quality time with those we love. We are so easily caught on the treadmill of life with the speed increasing. Think how much faster years fly by in the present compared to when we were younger.

The earth is still rotating at the same speed. It is our perceptions and our experiences that make it seem as if time goes by faster each passing year.

We don't have God goggles. In time, we can reflect and see where God's hand was moving in our celebrations and our tribulations. In the present, things can seem  uncertain and the path foggy. In the fog is where we learn to trust bigger and better. Knowing all that lies ahead could, frankly, be terrifying. Today, has enough trouble of its own.

“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." -Matthew 6:34

In a nutshell, we should not boast about tomorrow... and we are not to fret, either. Tomorrow will be revealed in His time. His timing and His ways are perfect.

He is our hiding place and the one who longs to share our joys and our sorrows. All of them.

Today, I am grateful for the unknown tomorrow.
